People often ask "what is the difference between a trumpet and a cornet?" One major difference is the proportion of length before and after the valve section, i.e. where in the length of the instrument are the valves. Here is a graphic to illustrate this difference.

RIP Philip Biggs
Sad news, Philip Biggs, editor of The Brass Herald, has passed after a short battle with cancer. He will truly be missed.

RE: Looking for Besson Meha piston (Kanstul)
Don't know why your tech says by hit-or-miss. The majority of valves are monel and the experts have no difficulty plating them. Unusual for the piston to wear so much, normally the majority of the wear is in the casing. BAC in Kansas City bought all the Kanstul stock, they might have something. But you might want to get a clearer diagnosis and have the casings and piston dimensions mapped out before shelling out on a new piston.

RE: Looking for a part
I would replace the hand slide tenon as well from a more current model. That way you can use more readily available parts.

RE: First Valve Slide and more
It is possible that your endurance increased because the Bach had worn valves and took more work.
I have found, especially with mature age students, that sharp lower notes are often due to TMJ issues.

RE: What are these marks?
@Newell-Post any expertise I may have is certainly not in this area. Neither a cosmetician nor an aesthetician be I!
However, the engraving on the bell is so clear that I doubt that it has been reacquired. Relacquering requires buffing which removes metal.

RE: Best Valves
If by "best valves" you mean action, that is simply a manufacturing/quality issue. However, I regard valve section as the heart of the trumpet. Different valve sections will encourage particular playing characteristics. For instance, all the trumpets that were made with Bauerfeind valves have a similar feel, all the trumpets made with Getzen valves have a similar feel, all the trumpets made with Carol valves have a similar feel. All three of those brands are very well made, and could be in the running for "best" action. I would stack my valves up against any of those brands, and in fact have only ever had one instrument back with valve issues - due to a dent in the valve casing from a loose mouthpiece.
Players remark that all my trumpets play as if they are in the same family, and I have some very diverse designs. I attribute this to the valve section/cluster.

RE: What are these marks?
@Kehaulani I would want to see better photos of the underside of the beginning of the lead pipe. Looks like it has been serviced recently (newish looking valve felts and very clean valves). Pricey!

RE: What are these marks?
Nothing sinister. That is what old lacquer on a used trumpet looks like.

RE: Purchased Olds Super.. cracked bell rim, no ring when flicked
Play it. Enjoy it. Do nothing unless the bell is buzzing. If you are tapping it checking for a ring you would have noticed any buzzing. Some bells ring, some bells don't. Some people have dark colored hair, some have light.

RE: Heard Kanstul out of Business - Was looking For A Part Thought They Might Have.
Not quite sure what you are after. The 165F was a UMI horn. Parts for these are available from Conn-Selmer (through an authorized tech). If you want Kanstul parts, Mike Corrigan of BAC bought all their stuff.

@administrator fyi Harrelson uses Carol Valves and other foreign components to his horns.
Thank you @ACB , I was not aware. It makes financial sense to do so, but proves the point that less and less companies are "100% homemade." I mean, Toyota uses a BMW engine in their new Supra!
Quite a few Supra purist are none too happy about that! Toyota's reasoning was that "purist" wanted a straight 6 engine. Okay. Then "purist" would also want it to be a Toyota engine! Toyota didn't want to spend the money on R&D for a low volume car. Also, only available in an automatic transmission!!! Yep, I agree it will be a low volume car.
Not for large families!

RE: Trumpets Made ONLY by Their Maker
There is some confusing and incorrect information about various trumpet brands in this thread. BTW here are some photos on this page of an ascending valve trumpet I finished in my South Salem, NY workshop last week.
