I had to play "Mr. Hollands Opus" tonight. Glad I have the endurance, strength, and breath control to play the "American Symphony" first section. We followed that up with "The Sinfonians". Those were after we played Bernstein's "Slava". I understand not being a fan, I'm not a fan, but I know what it takes. I've also taken the good doctor's advice about moving long tones to avoid stiff lips and find them as effective and they break the monotony of trying to be a drone. I don't know anyone that loves them.

I think that long tones done correctly can make a big difference, but it takes some real discipline to do them correctly. It's probably the key thing that keeps me from regaining the consistency I had during my technical best on the horn in my early 20s. Back then I took the time to do them and to do them correctly.
Hmmm....might have to try giving it a go the next time I hit the practice room.
Tobylou, unless someone else had the same idea as me, it's quite possible that I created your Batslap avatar.
(EDIT: mine is a touch different than the one you've got.)
IDK, I made mine up at a meme generator 9 years ago?? Sentiment is spot on.

RE: LONG TONES
Well, I posted over THere and will post here. Longtones are tough, boring, not glamorous, but can make all the difference in the world for a player with endurance and control. It's why my Batslap avatar says "LONGTONES"!!

Are you spending the night sleping on a pew, then?
I hope not because as Confucius say:
"He who fart in church, sit in pew!"Man, that stinks! But it is Resurrection Sunday, so all is forgiven!!

We can get a good sticky going for "How to Breathe."
That's from chapter 4 in "Triple C in 3 Days" correct??

RE: RIP Trumpet "Master"
Good catch Doc, I meant the Circle of Breath. Definitely not circular breathing.

RE: Game of Thrones Thread
I don't have HBO so there are lots of things I've never seen.

RE: RIP Trumpet "Master"
I learned a lot from Robin. I still use my hose trumpet, play the hymnal, and circular breath to name a few. IF that's all I got from him it would have been sufficient. The only thing we disagreed on was really us talking past each other on a matter.

RE: Bundy!
What I remember of Bundy was the green trumpet case. They were decent horns and sounded better than the Conn Directors.
Contrast it to this case and we have a winner. IMO, the case Conn is worse than the horn!!

RE: Blessing Artist gifted to me
Pretty much the "generic" Conn case of the day, and many other makers too! I have a similar case and an HNK(?) cornet was jammed into it!

RE: What the heck!?
DEG gimmicky trumpet. I do like the mute "quick change" feature. They can't fall out! I just wonder how it sounds to the audience!
