A very old vintage painting I did which involved some combining of images....just saying, I did not actually see this scene as it appears except when I painted it that way! We are looking at something from around 1980 here.
Owl bet that's one of your best wildlife paintings! It's a hoot!!

RE: Set lists
We have a set list. We practice the eventual list plus a few extras. Sometimes good tunes get cut, but the week of a performance, the list is set and there are no audibles for extraneous tunes. We've played one encore since I've been there. There are two folders, practice and performance. Only the performance folder attends the concert. I feel sorry for you having to lug all that music around. I used to play in a church band that did that. 500 charts and any song could be called up at any time. We played 8 different tunes on any given Sunday. I took my file "bucket" home to practice the tough songs (the ones George Rawlins recorded!!) and lo and behold an audible was called. The other trumpet player wouldn't let me look on his music, he turned it away!
Anyway, The conductor isn't going to change, none of them do, so maybe a little cart for your horns and file "folder". This is what I used for years and it is still in good shape! -

Rex Richardson and VCU might be of some interest for some.

RE: Trumpets Made ONLY by Their Maker
@administrator said in Trumpets Made ONLY by Their Maker:
Supra is a popular sports car. The original was manufactured by Toyota in in the 90s and early 2000s. It quickly became a legend, thanks, in part to the Fast and Furious movie. Recently, Toyota released a new version, which happens to be largely based on a BMW sports car. It's a good car, but some enthusiasts have expressed discontent over the lack of "purity." However, it is a moot point in my mind. A good car is a good car--whoever the manufacturer may be! I think the same is true for the trumpet. It might be fun to speculate or talk about things like "who bakes their own bread with wheat they grew in their backyard," but it really doesn't matter.
HAHA!! You're showing your age! I almost bought an '82 Supra when it shared the platform with the Celica. It was a GREAT car for it's day. I had to make a choice between it and a Mazda RX-7. UPS was considering a strike and the Mazda was cheaper, so I bought it. UPS didn't go on strike and I went back to the dealer to see if I could trade. It was my first real experience with the car business. They're nice until you're off the lot! They would only give me half of what I paid, 2 weeks later. Ahh, that beautiful black Supra......

RE: Does a large bore horn take more air?
Just simply because it's large bore? I would say not always. I have a Holton ST-302 that will suck the air out of you and a Blessing Super Artist that won't. Both are .468 bores. My Olds Pinto with the flow-through design will suck the air out of you despite being a medium bore .460. The 302 and SA both have big full sounds and articulation is the same on both for me. The Pinto has a bigger sound than most .460's but the sound isn't focused and is more "duck-like". Articulation is okay, I don't play it that much though. It's an oddity and was cheap, so I bought it.

Hope I didn't miss the bus. Thanks Tobylou8 for the tip-off. And I can read this site on my mobile too . The last century layout of the other board was driving me crazy!
You didn't miss any bus, it's just getting started.
It's not even fully loaded. If VB's driving, I'm sure it's a Magic Bus!!!

RE: Taps on a real bugle (as per my post on Facebook)
@J-Jericho said in Taps on a real bugle (as per my post on Facebook):
When I joined Bugles Across America, I used my Getzen M2003 Field Trumpet, usually with the Bb tuning slide, sometimes with the G slide. Since selling it, I've used a regular valve trumpet instead, usually open, sometimes with the third valve depressed.
Live Taps beats something like this:
One of the police departments in my area will consider nothing other than electronic Taps, as they feel that no mistakes can be made by a recording.
That's disgusting.

RE: Is a $280 New Bach Stradivarius Trumpet too good to be true?
@Kehaulani said in Is a $280 New Bach Stradivarius Trumpet too good to be true?:
Those are "slave labor" wages only when compared to ours. How do they compare to their own cost of living?
That's not the relevant point. Kanstul, for example, couldn't compete with the "slave" labor force of Chinese manufacturers, if indeed that is what pushed them over the edge. No one in this country can live off > $10,500 annual income. I've spent that much a year alone in fuel costs for my equipment. No US manufacturer can get away with paying any employee this paltry sum. This is an interesting read about how China gets away with low, low prices. It is 3 years old so some things are beginning to change for the better.

@grune said in Does a large bore horn take more air?:
@Kehaulani What do you mean, "take more air"? Technically, yes, a larger bore is a larger diameter, which creates a larger volume of air.
The volume of air in a horn is static. Large bore, medium bore or small bore. We do not replace that air when we blow into the mouthpiece, but are vibrating the air that is already there. So it takes no increase in air (more air) in a large bore horn if the efficiency in the vibratory freedom of that horn moves the sound wave through the medium filling the horn.
I'll disagree a bit. True, the air is already in the horn, but the act of blowing to induce lip vibration does move air through the instrument.
Yep, the air moves or you can't play the horn. Take a simple cheap Bach practice mute, insert into the bell and play. As you play, place your finger over the hole in the end. The air cannot flow through the horn and all sound stops, and if you're playing loudly, your ears may pop!

RE: Theme Suggestions Thread
I did like most of the functionality, but I was very used to it. There was something about uploading pics(?) but it may have been taken care of. It's gonna take awhile to figure it all out. Is there a tutorial section? I just remember learning of things that others knew about years before I found out.

RE: need perfect pitch to play trombone ?
@BigDub said in need perfect pitch to play trombone ?:
@Newell-Post said in need perfect pitch to play trombone ?:
That is sort of like assuming singers and violinists all need perfect pitch, since their "instruments" can produce a continuum of pitches. One of my old band directors said the trombone is the only instrument in the brass section that IN THEORY has the ability to play every note perfectly in tune. In practice,.... uhhh, not so much.
And yet, with that possibility the trombone offers, so few players ( at least ones I play near ) take advantage of it!
I would only wish brass players just have a basic sense of pitch. The knowledge of when they are off a bit, and I mean quite a bit. Is that too much to ask?C'mon man! Next thing you're gonna ask of them is to practice!!
