    • Ira Sullivan R.I.P.

Ira Sullivan, a fantastic Jazz multi-instrumentalist died on September 21 at age 89. A year and one half ago I saw him him play Trumpet, Flugelhorn, as well as every variety of Saxophone and flute known to man during a performance in Florida. He was a great musician and a nice individual. He was very approachable.
Below is a link to an article from the Chicago Tribune reporting his death and summarizing his career. Also there are two videos below, the first featuring Ira Sullivan on Soprano Saxophone and the second on Flugelhorn.

    • Linus, Lucy, and Lasagna

Here is the latest from “The East Coast Tiny Big Band”. We consist of two lonely musicians living on the East Coast 1,300 miles apart. There is also a guest appearance of a vocalist with perfect pitch.
This should not be confused with “The East Little Big Band”, which is the parent organization of “The East Coast Tiny Big Band”. In contrast, the parent organization has 3-4 musicians at any given time. It has previously has been featured under the heading of Trumpet Board Remote performances.

    • Born To Be Blue

On the Amazon streaming service today, I had the good fortune to find and watch a 2015 “biopic” movie, “Born To Be Blue”, concerning Chet Baker’s life and focusing on his recovery and return to playing following his extensive facial injuries. I thought it was a great movie and featured trumpet playing by an outstanding Canadian Trumpet Player, Kevin Turcotte. Ethan Hawke plays Chet Baker and sings.
Here is a trailer as well a sample of Kevin Turcotte’s channeling of Chet Baker. In the movie he also plays in the style of Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.

This is the best I could do. Don’t try this at home! “Yeah, That’s the ticket”.
Well, actually, even turning the playback speed to 25%, it would be very difficult so rather than recreate the wheel, I will submit these.

    • Plastic Musical Instruments

You think that plastic musical instruments are a relatively recent innovation? Think again.
Seventy years ago, jazz great Charlie Parker played a plastic saxophone at what many call the greatest jazz concert ever. A new deluxe reissue of that recording is out now featuring Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. To hear more about this classic performance click on the below NPR link.
