      @IrishTrumpeter

Most people start playing trumpet, and then immediately get intrigued by gear, especially mouthpieces, probably because it's easier and more fun than hours of hard practice, and you can do it anywhere. For example, you can look at gear online almost anytime, any place, even in a crowded restaurant, but should probably be discouraged from hours of trumpet practice in a crowded restaurant.

It is likely that you will eventually go on a MP safari, because no matter what anyone says, you will most likely feel the overwhelming need to satisfy your own curiosity. I only say that because I did that verbatim thing. Short version, I started with a Bach 3C, and took about a year to arrive at.... a 3C, albeit from a different manufacturer.

Regardless, this is one of the best things you could read to satisfy your curiosity, and could also save you a lot of money on mouthpieces.

    • RE: A little humour

Swankiest nightclub in town is hopping one night when an Escalade pulls up front. A guy hops out with an entourage of smoking hot ladies and makes a grand entrance, tipping $100 bills to all the staff, buying drinks for everyone, but the most amazing thing about the guy is that his head is just a huge orange.

He soon becomes a regular, and the story is always the same; lavish spending, a litany of pricey vehicles, and he always has half a dozen beautiful women in tow. Yet the most amazing thing about him remains the fact that his head is just a giant orange.

One night the head bartender manages to get close to him, and pries the story from him.

"Well, one day I was walking down the beach and came across a lamp. It looked like it had some lettering on the side, so I tried to rub the sand off, and when I did, a genie popped out and granted me 3 wishes."

"Yes," says the breathless bartender, "and what happened?"

"For my first wish, I told the genie I wanted unlimited money. I've never wanted for cash since then."

"Wow," says the bartender, so then what happened?"

"Well, then I told the genie I wanted all the most beautiful women to be attracted to me. He granted that as my second wish."

"But what happened then," asked the bartender, now hanging on every word with bated breath.

"Well, that's were things went wrong, because I asked him to make my head a giant orange."

Holy heck, anyone can be a moderator here!

As King Arthur's knights once famously said while searching for the Holy Grail.... "Run away!"

Just kidding. I know Barliman from TM, and can vouch that he is a very experienced trumpet player and all around good egg. Whether boiled or scrambled remains to be seen.

Congrats, Elmar. Happy for you, sir! I know you'll be a great moderator.

Leonard Cohen’s Halleluja performed by “United Trumpeters Peruvian”.

Loved the playing/sound of Cesar Horna and Jose Montenegro in that clip. They were all good, though.

Also, is that Fred Flintstone's car going past at the 5:08 mark?

@greatleather Those look really nice. Last year I was looking for a mouthpiece case just like the leather 2-Mpc case you offer. I was only able to find items of either lower quality or designs I didn't much like. Thanks for sharing.

    • RE: PLEASE KEEP CIVIL!

@ROWUK said in PLEASE KEEP CIVIL!:

My problem is that I am not really motivated. Many threads develop in a similar way:

      1. original post
      2. a couple of thank yous
      3. maybe a subject supporting post or two
      4. Class clown attack that has nothing to do with the original content
      5. Derailed post can go just about anywhere - but not without devils advocate posting

I can say that the feeling is like with certain teachers that I had - for one or 2 lessons. My general feeling here is of suffocation. Extreme efforts (in my opinion) are being made to keep it "clean", "friendly", "family". The general feeling is not digging in and accepting reality, rather a lavender painted over.

I a pretty sure that if I started posting like I feel, that the threads would last 2 days. In that case, why bother. At Trumpetmaster I made a point about getting to the meat immediately. Here we seem to be afraid of blood.

I agree on posts getting derailed pretty quickly. I was reading a post from this morning where someone asked for advice, and three replies later it was guys joking about stuff that had zero to do with the original post.

I'm all for civil discourse or even animated discourse if it doesn't devolve into name-calling or profanity.

    • RE: This is a hoot and is very well done!

@Niner the movie producers didn't want to deal with the mess or the time-consuming reloading of percussion guns, so Uberti (I believe) manufactured a special revolver that looked period accurate, but would shoot modern cartridges. I believe they still manufacture it or similar - an 1851 conversion model called The Man With No Name. Tuco assembling his own piece was a bit disingenuous, but in keeping with his character, and pretty funny. I've always enjoyed that scene, minor historical inaccuracies notwithstanding.

Having now aired all grievances and assessments of movie props, did you like the trumpet music? I cannot find that particular piece anywhere, but have halfway learned to play it by ear.

That's a great one - my dad had the soundtrack when we were kids. Went back and watched that movie again sometime last year. GBU puts both it's predecessors to shame, but the soundtrack is great.

    • RE: Opinions on Valve Oils?

@flugelgirl I'm not familiar with horn repair, but in the firearms industry it is common for customers to completely gum up the inner workings of a mechanism with incorrect cleaning products, or by mixing products, or just general poor maintenance.

It is also common for customers to then pretend like the problem was caused by something other than their maintenance habits.

On the trumpet oil, I've used both Ultra Pure and Monster in recent history, and have had good luck with both. I typically wipe out the valve block completely before applying oil.

    • Welcome Thread

So I was scrolling through our current members, and it appears that roughly half of the TB members have never posted anything to the site. In the context of infusing fresh members with their thoughts and questions, could we add a Welcome/Introduce Yourself thread in its own category to the home page?

I remember there was one that was fairly visible on TM, and it seemed to help usher in the new users and make them feel comfortable to start posting on other threads.

If there is already such a thread on here, and I just missed it, please carry on, and/or make it more visible on the home page.

    • RE: Did something change?

When I joined TM, I was looking for help and interaction on trumpet playing, and I realized I'd stumbled onto a great community of players. I think this site has unrealized potential, but may take time.

I'm personally at a stage in life and music where I'm not just full of trumpet questions as I once was, so I hop on here for camaraderie more than insight on playing trumpet. TM seemed to get a lot of younger trumpet players asking questions, and this one seems not to, or at least not yet.

I hope it keeps going. I'm a big fan of the middle ground between censoring vulgarity and name-calling while keeping a relaxed atmosphere that encourages more interaction.

On the old TM threads, some of the hottest debates were what gave it character and made it interesting. And yes, some of them were just asinine, but it all somehow worked.

      Keep it going, boys.

@neal085 true enough. Entry level Yamaha AD line is made in China. Conn-Selmer Prelude line are also made in China. King seem to fare a bit better, though, and are made in the Eastlake factory. Jupiter are made in Taiwan, but intermediate and pro models are very nicely made and leagues above the entry level.

That's great info - thank you! Think we're going to go with the King this time around.

Put another way, there are 170 users who have a combined 58 posts. That's a Tuesday afternoon for Kehaulani or Dr. GO.

I don't expect everyone to be garrulous, but I wonder what keeps them in the shadows.

And I did locate the Welcome thread under Announcements, but it has zero posts in it.

    • RE: A little humour

      @SSmith1226 and @Brian-Moon

That's all very interesting. Science is defined by observation, and there is no recorded observation for the millions of years, etc., which makes it all just everyone's best guess. Most people can't make an accurate portrayal of events 100 years ago, much less the supposed millions of years ago. Who can hope to authoritatively state such a record?

I remember looking into carbon dating a while back, and the margin for error is apparently astronomical. As a dating mechanism it has more questions than answers, yet it was taught as the standard for my entire school tenure.

Anyway, don't know how all this landed under the topic of humor, so, uh, here's a quick joke:

What is green and has wheels?

Grass. I was lying about the wheels.
