@Sound-Advice - I don't understand why you continued with any system for several decades when it wasn't paying off for you. What was the call of that one system that was so compelling when there's a myriad of other systems out there that may have given you more immediate results? Thanks.

    • RE: Values

I would say you got a good deal! Did you get a good horn?

Speaking about inflation, I was doing a little sleuthing yesterday and saw our old house in Hawai'i up for sale. When we bought it in 1960, we paid, new, $17,000.00. It's up for sale today for 1,000,200.00!

Big difference between the price of trumpets. I bought my Connstellation for $200.00 at the same time as our house. Today it usually sells at less than that!

@fels they are just using reharmonizations. Some of the changes in the older editions of the real books are actually ukulele chords, so they have been modernized over time.

It was often assumed that the ukulele would be played in a group with piano. So, with only four notes available to it, the arrangers would write the ukulele part playing the middle and upper extension notes of a chord.

So, for example, when the actual chord was a C Maj9, (C-E-G-B-D), the ukulele part would be E-G-B-D, but the actual chord would not be an E minor chord, it would be a C Maj9 with the root (C) being supplied by the piano (or bass player).

Dick Grove called this "bringing the chord up to zero".

I’ve started practicing more. Working on those boring long tones that I’ve been ignoring for so long.

You could mix it up with "moving long tones", like Cicowitcz' "Long Tones".

I loved just turning on the computer and playing through a number of tunes using Band in a Box. Total control. You can speed it up or slow it down, while staying in the same key. Or you can change keys if you want. And a huge choice of tunes.

      Some of my favourites:
There Will Never Be Another You
      Milestones
      So What
      Ceora
      Sunny
      and a ton more

I still would like to know about the voicing and chord choice on this.
And, no, I'm not being snarky. I genuinally would like to know.

@Kehaulani That's more or less a new take on that old Nazi German joke... a guy goes to his town hall and tells the civil servant he wants to change his name. "Well, let's hear your name to see whether a change is permissible." - "Adolf Shittyfuck" - "Oh yes, I can understand you don't want that name changed. But our Führer has made such a change possible. What would you like your new name to be?" - "Albert Shittyfuck".

Hmm. I first heard it in an Air Force band back in the 60s.

Most of the constructive criticisms I would have made, are the same as Dr. Mark's. Pay attention to balance. Also, I can't tell sometimes what's the lead. I would also work on entrances and releases. They need to be together. And I question some of the voicings and harmonies. Where did you get them?

Music is the original Never Ending Story. It can be frustrating because you never seem to get where you want to be. Satisfying because of the challenges and the incremental advances. And above all, for the creativity.

Keep creating, it'll keep getting better and will be rewarding as you increase. Keep it up.

Don't sweat any negative, but constructive, criticism. 😉

      Very interesting, thanks.

Regarding changing names, I once knew an American-Indian guy named Charlie Humpaneagle. Other guys in the band kept telling Charlie he should change his name, much to his constant irritation.

Finally, one day he came to rehearsal looking very content. Like a burden had been lifted from his shoulders. Everybody noticed this. Finally, one guy asked him,

"Hey, man. You look so relieved. What did you do"?
      "Changed my name", he said.
"Cool" the other guy said. "What'd you change it to?"
      "Ed" he retorted.

I mean the hair styles and clothing. Wagner and Parton would've fit right in with the Welk crew.
p.s. - no love lost with him then, none now.

      Fascinating, man. Thanks.

BTW, I missed playing Peter Menin's Canzona, Holst's Jupiter, Rimsky-Korsakov's Russian Easter Festival Overture. I didn't belong to a band, but I still miss playing them. 😄

      I don't see it.

IF you look real close, you should see a bugle.

      LOL!

George - that's really a mature way of seeing it.

I was just thinking this morning. My 95 year old mother is really confident of her health and is a little bullet proof. But I and my sister have both health problems and also fall into the vulnerable age group.

She may feel she won't get the disease herself, but she can carry it to both of her vulnerable children. People have to think about others' vulnerability and not only about whether or not they will get the disease, themselves.
