As I am aware at present, there are 4 physicians (MDs) that post here.

And talk about your pecking orders, harrumph.

When I was in Germany and in hospital, the head Doctor and his posse of interns were making their rounds. When he looked at my chart, he looked up at me and said, collegially, "Dr. X. I see you are one of us." And I replied jokingly, "If you can conduct a symphony orchestra, yes."

On every subsequent round, he addressed me as Mister X.

β€œMan, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself.” ― Miles Davis.
" I think you can be influenced by other players without necessarily sounding like them."

Word. I was greatly influenced on alto sax by Art Pepper, but heard a playback of me and I sounded more like late Sonny Red, LOL.

The sad thing is that others are, and if you don't stock up, yourself, they may deprive you of some when you routinely need some.

It's like New Years' Eve. I'm not afraid I can't handle drinking. I'm afraid of all the others who can't handle their's. "Amateur's Night."

Influenced by Chet Baker and Miles Davis.

      Wow, I don't hear it.

I remember getting wire brushed by a great player when I said that Vincent Herring said he was influenced by Cannonball Adderley. ~I~ didn't say Vincent played like Cannonball. ~Vincent~ said he was influenced by Cannonball's playing.

Absolutely! Just like beer never broke my heart, my trumpet has always been a source of comfort that I can escape to.

Both beer and the trumpet certainly have broken my heart! 😈

Sound Advice - do you "know" Franklin, where he's coming from and his posting background?

I've had musicians say "That's hate music" when I listen to Marylin Manson,

Dr-Mark - I though Marylin Manson and music was an oxymoron. 😁

Roy Roman describes a roll-in in his Stevens system videos. Only he uses the term "invert the lips". And he makes the same mistake that I think plenty of others do by suggesting that "both lips must roll-in" while the air is already blowing.

In The Balanced Embouchure, which method Jeff Smiley has had a lot of success and whose Rolled-In position, I think, is inspired by Stevens et. al., he uses both lips to roll-in while the air is already blowing.

FWIW, the virus lock-down hasn't affected my practicing at all. Other stuff, big time. But practicing and music-related activities. - no.

This is also a part of The Balanced Embouchure, called "Roll In".

My question is, in the Steven's system, does one use this Roll-In embouchure for all tessituras or does one use it only for high notes?

Should be either notated a 4th higher or, if in concert pitch a 7th higher. The slurs are not original.

I don't understand. Concert pitch is one step below Bb trumpet notation. Wouldn't that, then, be a third higher?

Regarding beginners' luck, so to speak, the Balanced Embouchure (BE) also has a range track record with beginners. I think it's based on rolling the lips in for upper register playing. This concept is not specific to BE but it is a part of it.

    • RE: Today's crazy Maynard piece

For me, artistically, there's a point at which I quit listening to Maynard. He used to play longer phrases, musically more substantially, and after a while his output seemed to me to be on his and his band's energy and showmanship.

His soloing on Message from Newport e.g. showed off his formidable chops while retaining a lot of musicality. The proportions changed over time.

My list of his records that bring me the most pleasure are roughly from the late 50s to his M.F. series.

Wow. Thanks. Now that I think about it when you put it in context, air-wise, I can play a lot longer as it ascends, for me particularly above top space F.

Dr. Mark. When you say, " Its amazing just how much air a person doesn't need", do you factor in the resistance, or lack thereof, of the horn/mouthpiece or is that not a factor? Thanks.
