I love listening to Uan Rasey. His solo on Chinatown is soul-melting. Also, his rendition of American in Paris is some of my favorite playing. What an incredibly underrated musician.

As far as modern, scientifically documented data, there are literally numerous peer reviewed studies, for example showing that soap and water, is far more effective than alcohol based hand sanitizers for prevention of Clostridium Difficile infections in a hospital or office setting.

      AD841668-BA80-4E6F-9BF3-71A0FAD97CA1.png

Hand washing with soap and water is significantly more effective at removing C. difficile spores from the hands of volunteers than are ABHRs. Residual spores are readily transferred by a handshake after use of ABHR.

      Thanks for understanding.

I could not agree more on this subject. Because of C. Diff... soap is all I use going in and out of all rooms. AND lest one forget, the soap wash must be done for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing "Mary has a little lamb"). This I taught to all of my medical students before I took them into the Neonatal Unit to teach them how to perform the Newborn exam.

When I started reading this thread and it clumped trumpet technology/sound in a 50 year grouping, my mindset was as if I was reading about something historical, antique, distant past. Then I realized that last 50 year clump wasn't in the historic, distant past. It was within my lifetime! 😨

I most certainly agree! I started playing in 1966 over 50 years ago.

Unfortunately, we only have audio documentation for the last 100 years or so. The instruments in museums and in the hands of very gifted players however are showing the 50 year turnover on style/construction/technical possibilities. I do not have instruments from every epoque, but I have natural trumpets from the Rennaissance, early baroque, late baroque and classical periods. I have valved instruments from around 1880 to very modern Monette. Even the approach to playing these instruments is different.

It's on PBS every Saturday here. I watch it because Welk had a lot of damn good musicians in his band and some really talented singers, too. But Welk himself was a bit on the corny side in my view anyway. But hell, it is the only commercial big band music on tv these days.

      Bob Pixley

I know Jeff and have played at a few venues he was also performing at. He is a tremendous player on historic instruments, as well as a great jazz player. He knows me by my real name, though, not as Bob Pixley...lol

Exactly. Been there and done that several times.

I play long tones first with no attack. The horn should speak on a whisp of air in all necessary registers. Then I check intervals to see if the entire system is in tune with itself. I do not play long passages, rather only short things that I have prepared well. Nothing to show off. Normally, I have a reference instrument with me to keep me grounded and open minded.

In a store or someones house, I have no chance to test "projection" or "power" so I don't. If there is a church or reasonably sized hall with good acoustics. near by, I try to take it there to test how well I hear myself when playing as well as other things needing space.

I always have a trusted second set of ears to also judge from the receiving end.
