Tomorrow night we move from practicing in an outdoor gazebo to a new and larger indoor location. I am using a woman's nylon sockette ( they wear with sandals, I think ) and it doesn't seem to muffle the sound so I think things should go well. We have to vacate the room after 30 minutes of playing and wait for the air to change ( not sure how long this is going to be ) and when not playing we will be wearing face masks.
At the other trumpet site there is a long thread on whether music instruments are releasing dangerous levels of aerosols or whether thy are not. I haven't formed an opinion because how the hell do I know if a trumpet , for example, emits dangerous levels of aerosols or not. I just want to play and hopefully get back to some concert gigs, and to me the mask over the bell of my horn did not affect my playing by trying it out at home.
So, looking forward to tomorrow night.

RE: Cornet blog
I only visited the site a couple of times and there was never anything new but I didn't notice the date. So now I know why there was nthing new.

RE: Cornet blog
I've visited this site off and on. I believe it is a fairly new blogspot. You can give it a try and see what you think,

RE: The Poo Attack
It's probably that forward movement of the chops, but using the poo attack just seems to bring every thing together for me. Whether it is pure breath POO or a soft tongued TOO, the poo sets me up properly.

@Dr-GO
You are so correct, Doc. For me it really improved on my interpretation of ballads. The poo tonguing can be very soft and some love ballads need that softness. -
The Poo Attack
I am into my 5th year as a comeback player. The first three years were a struggle, and most of the struggle was embouchure related, although I didn't realize that until approximately 2+ years ago.
I always liked to watch videos of Chris Martin, Principal Trumpet with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. I loved how he sounded and how he seemed to make playing the trumpet look so easy. Amongst the videos of Chris I came upon one of him being interviewed on Sarah's Horn Hangouts. Near the end of the interview he discussed the poo attack. I was intrigued by what he was saying and watched him demonstrate it. That was the beginning of me and the poo attack .
Although I don't recall having any problems when I played in the 50s and 60s, since my comeback my attack, and articulation in general, had always been inconsistent, and mostly on the messy side. Well that all changed after I mastered the poo attack and I haven't looked back since.I know everyone is different. What works for one person won't necessarily work for another. So I am not advocating a change to anyone, but if you are interested in the poo attack you can do a Google search of Sarah's Horn Hangouts videos and you'll find the one I came across of her interviewing Chris. I believe the part where he discusses the poo attack is somewhere near the last 10 minutes. But the entire interview is really interesting.

RE: Still unable to log in under the original barliman2001 tag, and in hospital...
Oh, man, so sorry to hear of those eye problems. I have nerve damage in my left eye due to glaucoma and it causes me problems when the eyes get tired and can affect my playing at times. I pray your surgery will be successful, barliman2002 and that you will have many years of trouble free playing ahead.

RE: Cavalier Trumpet
OOPS. Forget what I posted below. I see Gendreauj already replied.
I'm pretty sure it is an early Conn student trumpet. Look up the Conn Loyalist site on Google and it may be mentioned there. I stand to be corrected, but I remember something about the name Cavalier and Conn student horns.

RE: Vintage Horn Eye Candy
Thought I'd revive this older thread by introducing the latest addition to my Bb collection:
** 1942 Buescher True Tone 400 ML Bore Bb from Trent Austin's personal collection**
This horn, in lacquer with nickel trim, is in amazing condition for a 78 year old horn. The Art Deco design includes reverse 1st, 2nd and 3rd valves to the right side of the valve block. The lead pipe goes directly to the 3rd valve and really gives this baby a clean easy blow. The valves are scalloped at top and bottom. The horn has excellent compression and the valves are smooth and fast. With its vintage dark-honey lacquer look, it is a beauty to look at and after playing the first song on it ( Autumn Leaves ) my sweet warm tone never sounded better.
I now have 6 trumpets in my Bb collection. But they are not there just to look pretty. I play them all on a 3 day rotational basis, that is probably going to change a little for the Buescher. It will get an extra day because it is so damn much fun to play. -

@Dr-GO
I'd get a kick out of anything Botti plays. He is marvelous and just seems to make it look so easy. -
RE: German Band
@Dale-Proctor
" Basic ornamentation " of the melody has worked for me the 12 years I played in the 50s and 60s and anything I been doing since I started up again in 2016. In fact I don't care to listen to those jazz players who record a 7 or 8 minute rendition of Stella By Starlight where you may hear 40 or 50 seconds of the melody. I was always a huge fan of Bobby Hackett because you always knew the title of the song he was playing. -
RE: German Band
@Dale-Proctor
Wow, that is some resume`.I would have to say that you must be an exceptional sight reader in order to accomplish all you have. All the things you have done more than make up for not having the improv skills to play jazz. I would be quite content if I had your talent, my friend.
There are a couple of players I know and have played with who happen to be great sight readers and yet, like you, are not skilled in improv. But, man, put the notes on paper and they can play anything. I'm sure you could, too !

RE: Valve oils
I know Jack and I know Jim. They are fine gentlemen who make excellent bourbon... I invite them to my living room on occasion, but much less than I used to because I have to limit my alcohol intake because of the medication I have had to start taking this summer. Bummer !
Sorry for getting this thread off track,

RE: Hello! Welcome to TB, who are you?
@Dale-Proctor said in [Hello!
Thanks, George. That movie was made almost 20 years ago, so I have a few more miles on me now.
Don't worry, we trumpet players age well...LOL ! -
RE: Valve oils
@Dr-GO
That happens to me after a shot or two of Jack.
