Welcome and good luck with the comeback. I made mine in 2016 after a 50 year layoff. Yeah, I am an old fart of 84.

RE: Famous Signature Songs
@smoothoperator
Yeah, a lot of people thought Perez Prado was a trumpet player when actually he played piano and was more an arranger and band leader. I am 84 so I am familiar with a lot of trumpet players in that era and I really knew very little about the fellow playing Cherry Pink. But he was damn good on that piece anyway. -
RE: Some Of Your Favorite Trumpet Gals
Yeah, she is good, Wayne. I've watched quite a few of her videos.

Some Of Your Favorite Trumpet Gals
I am not asking who you think is the best, just some of your favorites.
One of mine happens to be Bria Skonberg, and not just because she is Canadian. I just love her smoky voice and the way she plays that trumpet> And she is easy on the eyes, too.
The video I chose is a really hot performance of a bluesy song she composed called SO IS THE DAY.
While watching this video I found myself wishing I was that mouthpiece on her trumpet.I have the lead sheet for this song. It is a lot fun to play.

RE: Count Basie live at The Sands
When Frank and The Count got together magic happened, but that particular concert at the Sands was really special to me.

RE: Guilty Pleasure Listening
Abba for sure, and Willie Nelson singing just about anything, but especially the old jazz standards.

RE: Staying in top playing shape post band shutdown
Well the second wave of Covid has shut the band down again and it looks like it will be a long one, so I will be stepping up my practice sessions to keep myself in band shape for whatever time is necessary.

RE: Convert notes into music
Nice example, Ivan. When I play a new song with lyrics I actually learn how to sing it before before I even try to play it on the trumpet. As your videos shows, matching notes to the lyrics is an absolute necessity if you want the song to sound correct.

RE: Dry instrument vs Wet instrument
I only have 7 horns and each one gets played ( for 3 days ) on a rotation basis so I guess they don't sit unused long enough to affect how they play because they all perform just fine.

Wayne Bergeron
I just found out that Wayne Bergeron has throat cancer. There is a video put together by his friends at that other site.
I feel certain Wayne will beat this thing. -
RE: The “Elysian Trumpet”
I just image that beautiful work of Monette art sitting un-played. Seems like such a waste, but understandable considering the reason why it was made. In my opinion it belongs to the city of New Orleans.
Interesting story, Steve, thanks.

RE: Why not another thread about bigger horns ?
I don't play anything shown so far in this thread, but it is sure interesting to look at the instruments and read about them.
I tried trombone for awhile in my teens, but using the larger mp affected my trumpet embouchure so I sold the trombone. -
RE: reading the road map

Wow, I sure miss gigs.......
️
I know how you feel, flugelgirl. Playing with your band mates is okay, but playing for an audience...that's something else altogether and was the reason I picked up the horn in the first place.
Also, you were fortunate to have those private teachers. I had very little instruction when it came to sight reading. My teacher, a pro trumpet player, concentrated more on playing the instrument.

reading the road map
I was watching a video on dead air ( stale air, residual air, whatever you want to call it ) and wondered if other players use the method I apply to avoid having dead air issues, and God knows I had plenty of them in the past.
My method is simple, I keep the tank full to ensure I have good air when I need it. So, no matter how well I know a piece of music, I read each song or piece of music like a road map, before I play, looking for those bars that have notes that take sudden jumps above the staff, or where a series of tied whole notes are called for. Then I go back 2 bars and put a breath mark. It's my warning sign and extra air will be needed, so time to top up, buddy.
Other than reasons as noted, I don't use breath marks per se. I know when it is time to top up while playing a piece as a whole, but more important to me is the unexpected twist or steep hill ahead.
I'm not recommending this. I am just stating this is what works best for me.

RE: Books about Trumpets
What may be a bit nicer than a book would be Wynton Marsalis' dvd on History Of The Trumpet. I rented it not too long ago and found it extremely interesting. I'm thinking about buying it.

RE: What's Going On Here ?
UPDATE
Just want to let you all know that last night during the 20 minute break from practice, I went to my car in the parking lot, sat in the back seat and played a variety of easy exercises that included long tones, lip slurs and some scales including chromatic scales. I took a good rest between each exercise and figure I played about 12 or 13 minutes of the 20 minute break. When practice resumed I played the remaining 40 minutes of practice without any embouchure problems.
I guess not playing for 20 minutes was encouraging edema. I don't know, but I do know I will be continuing to play during the breaks from now on.
