It isn't just too much pressure you have to be careful of, but over use of the lips can lead to a lip injury.

I am 84 and my chops aren't the same ones I played with back in the 50's/60's where playing a 3 hour gig was doable. These days I have to be careful of over playing. I did a 2 hour concert once with a lot of difficult ( range-wise ) material and the next day I was blowing dead air. The muscles around the chops had been damaged and were swollen. It took 3 days of applying ice packs to the chops before I could blow notes again properly.

Be careful, your virgin lips are vulnerable. If you play 5 minutes, rest five minutes. Take your time. What's the rush ? Take a good breath from deep down inside and use the stomach muscles to support the air. Blow soft, like you would if you were blowing out a candle. Play lots of long tones consisting of whole notes and half notes. Make the C in the middle of the staff an objective, but don't push it. Work your way there slowly, note by note.

And pay attention to you posture. Practice breathing with shoulders down and chest out, holding the horn with elbows pointing slightly away from the body

      Good luck.

The one you show in the listing has what is known as a first valve slide trigger for moving the slide in and out. But a lot of early vintage horns ( my 1952 Selmer Paris, as an example ) didn't have first slide finger saddles or triggers.

Good luck, man, but honestly, not knowing what your doing will lead to a lot of bad habits that will be hard to change even when you actually do know what you are doing.

Just know that the trumpet is one of the hardest instruments to play even when you know what you are doing.

Harry James has been overlooked by today's jazz lovers. He was doing things with his horn in jazz that amazed other well known players of the day.
If you want to know exactly how great a trumpet player, and jazz musician, Harry James really was, I suggest you pick up a copy of Chuck Par-Due's interesting book: HARRY JAMES Trumpet Icon

Anyway, I prefer to enjoy Lady Gaga without analysis.

@kehaulani said in Star Spangled Banner:

There's a BIG difference in Lady Gags's interpretation and many others. Her's, while modern, was respectful, at the same time modern with a use of contemporary harmonies and rhythms. It was emotional as a means of singing tribute to those fallen, yet avoided the hot-dogging, melismas of many of her predecessors.

I am not a US citizen so maybe my opinion doesn't count, but I agree with kehaulani. I have heard many versions over the years ( some pretty horrid ) and I really felt Lady Gaga's is one of the best. So much heartfelt emotion and from a gal with a voice that's the sweetest thing this side of Heaven.

No argument there, Doc, since the Phwooooooo is the method I use. But I didn't want to confuse the OP since he hasn't even made a sound on the trumpet yet. Saying T would be easier for him. Later when he has some experience, he can look at the Phhwwoooo method.

The lips just need to vibrate and this happens when you blow properly into the mouthpiece and through the trumpet. Say mmm, place lips on mouthpiece , and say T with the tongue as you blow .

    • Change from Wedge to ACB

I have used a Wedge MD65 (.650" measured vertically ) for the past 2 years and though it has been good to me in many ways ( comfort and increased endurance ) the setting on my chops is often a problem. A slight deviation of placement within the oval shape of the Wedge affects my overall playing ability. My OLDchops are just too unforgiving.
But I loved the Wedge and lived with the problem until a recent pinched nerve problem with my left shoulder and arm brought the situation to a head.
The pinched nerve did some damage causing me to lose some mobility of the left arm. I usually play with the elbows pointed away from the body, but in order to hold the horn, I had to rest the left elbow just above the hip, and even then the horn would move a little on the chops affecting my tone, breathings and what not.
I discussed this with Josh, the mp guy, at Austin Custom Brass and he suggested I try the ACB3CS. It matched the .650" ID of the Wedge and said I should find the comfort of the ACB to be as good as the Wedge.
Well, I've been using the ACB3CS for a few days now and couldn't be happier. The struggle to get back in shape after that pinched nerve injury has taken a turn for the better thanks to the change in mouthpieces.
I never thought that I'd find another mp as good or even possibly better than the Wedge, but I really think I have. It's early, I know, but good things are happening, so we will see.

There are lots of folks here will give you good advice, but not having a professional standing beside you to see what you are doing wrong can lead to developing a lot of bad habits. An you will do things wrong, believe me. Posture and proper breathing are good examples.

Nice looking collection. At 7 you have the same number as me, but I only have one cornet. The rest are bB trumpets. Which 7 did you keep ?

In the US the Prado version was released in 1955 before Calvert's, and featured Billy Regis on trumpet. It went to number one on the US Billboard chart . A couple of months later in the United Kingdom, Calvert released his version and it went to the top of the charts there for something like four or five months. I actually liked both versions but I had already bought the Prado record by then.

If I login using Microsoft Edge, everything on the page is frozen. I get logged in normally when I use Google, which is what I am now using.
I wonder how many others are locked out and unable to complain because they don't know the admin's e-mail address.

Hi Wayne. I got unlocked by using Google today. I sure didn't get any help from the administrator, even though I got his e-mail address and sent him several notes. Oh, well...if I get locked out again I will say farewell to TB.

About glasses. Reading glasses and my regular glasses didn't work for reading music. I got a special pair of glasses for that .Measurements were taken of how far I sit from the music stand. I've been using them for 4 years now, though I had to change the lens last fall. These glasses work just fine.

Yes, I could tell she used the phwoooooo embouchure right from the outset. The shape of her mouth and lips is similar to Chris Martin's and have the forward push look.
