      Yeah, I would really like to see Valgano Brother participate more, and more from Robin ( Rowuk ), and younger guys like Patrick Gleason ( trickg ) who can speak from experience would definitely produce a stronger pedagogy section.

      I tried myself several times to post things that would fall under the pedagogy banner. They would start off well but would slowly become victim to too much humor that was often totally unrelated to the subject of the thread, and interest would die off.

      I've been a hard core Sinatra fan for most of my 85 years on this planet and still am. And even though he had some bad years during the 70s and 80s, we'll never see another entertainer like him.
      Word is that he was on antidepressants at around the time of that concert ( 1974, I believe ) and may account for the poor performance overall, and not just on the Jim Croce piece. Note the stumble at the finish of the song. It wasn't the first time he did that in those days. He was also starting to have trouble remembering the lyrics to many of the old standards he did in his earlier years. Kinda sad.

    • Silent weekends

      Where is everybody on Saturday and Sunday ? It is rare to come here on the weekends and find a post of any kind. I have to go to Trumpet Herald on Saturday and Sunday where there is lots of activity if I want to get my weekend fix.

      I don't know why it is this way here and right now I don't have any suggestions, but I just wanted to point out that there are a lot weak areas at TB, especially with serious discussions about pedagogy. New young players and comeback players are plentiful at that other site, but sorely missing here, probably because they are seeking help and can't find it here.

      Say what you like about Dr. Mark, but when he was a member, there was a lot of posts in the pedagogy department. We need experienced members like Mark to get things going or we will never see any growth.

      Of course, this is just in my humble opinion.

      Nice going, Joel.

      Also, When I Grow Too Old To Dream is an excellent tune to practice with because it covers the staff well throughout the arrangement.

      @administrator

      Or you could choose a Manchester Brass like I did. It was custom made for Austin Custom Brass in the same factory that makes Carol Brass. It is a great band horn with excellent valves and an open blow and even lower priced than Carol Brass .

      Welcome, Joel. Seems you already have a solid music background so you are half way there in becoming a trumpet player.
      I played in my teens and twenties ( 1953 to 1965 ) and quit to concentrate on a career in publishing. I made a come back at age 79. Kinda tough to start all over again at that age, but I had a good teacher back in 1953 (a professional trumpet player) who taught me things I never forgot. I started my come back in March of 2016 and by the fall I was playing first chair with a local seniors band.

      The trumpet can be a bitch, but it was and always will be the only instrument for me. Good luck.

      Fantastic, Doc. You have a nice sound on the flugel. Excellent improvisation without straying too much from the melody, too.

      Wow, that really sucks. I've never had that problem so I can't help, but why not start a CHAT with flugelgirl she could probably make a few suggestions for an approach to the problem.

      @_mark_ What mouthpiece are you using?

      Yes, Mark, I wonder the same thing.

      I am and have been a Wedge user for about two years but have moved away from it because the placement of the mp on the lips ( it has a dot at the top and the bottom of it's oval rim ) is too critical for my old chops. But you get a 90 day return period and that would be enough to see if it would work for you. I was using a 65MD (.650 inches ) size.

      @rowuk

      As always, Robin, I look forward to, and cherish, any input you have on interesting subjects such as scales. They have done, and continue to do, so much to help me play the trumpet, especially now that I am in my mid-80s and finding it tougher to play well each new year.

      I really don't think the thread lost its way as you state, Ivan, but we are all are entitled to our opinions, and in fact I liked your first reply. Different points of view make subjects that more interesting. And because your knowledge of music is far superior to mine, I will not debate what is or what isn't a scale.

      I know what you're saying and I have to admit I felt the same as you about the situation. The only thing that kept me as a TM member was the people. They were more civil and much nicer than those at TH. I feel the same about TRUMPET BOARDS. I am always looking to learn something new about playing the horn and there is far too little of that here, but I really like the members and that's why I stay.

      For those of us who enjoy a little laugh, we have a board for that.

      @barliman2001

      I know, and I don't like to be a stick in the mud but I've seen threads fall apart because of too much humor.

      If we want to keep members and attract new ones who come here looking for help and suggestions with their playing then we should take a long hard look at what we are doing.

      Kehaulani, who I hope is okay because he hasn't been here in sometime, was one who shared my thoughts on this matter. He felt there was too much humor in threads dealing with the technical aspects of playing the trumpet.

    • RE: The value of scales

      I had a feeling that this thread would eventually become a victim of humor. And that is fine, but for players who will one day face the fact that old age and injuries can and will happen, the intent of this thread was to let them know that there are solutions, and maybe scales will be one for them as it is for me.

    • RE: The value of scales

      I agree with Ivan, to a certain degree, that scales are not music, but there are occasions when scales form part of a song. A good example of this is the bridge in the old jazz standard BLUE ROOM where the run exceeds one full octave. And I have heard many versions of how some players improvise it. I've even tried a few things myself.

      Here is a take by Chet :
