    • RE: Used prices?

Over on the oTHer site there is a price question. Some have stated that just because some would pay a higher price for something that is a justified reason to raise the price.

If your product is tops and it’s affordable then why would you raise the price and make it less accessible? Other than greed?

If I can really do something for someone then why should I cash in? Seems if I can make a great horn or pass along a great horn then that is what I should do

    • RE: Spin Fishing and Trumpets

Honestly fishing is just about my favorite thing to do. Then brass
I always fish no mater the season.
So far this year I’ve probably birds nested my bait caster a hundred and fifty times but I still fish with it.
Plenty of spinning gear too! Definitely more convenient at 2am in the bank of a river than my bait casters.
I’ve really been wanting to get into just using a hand line and gorge. I really dig a more primitive fish or hunt. Anyone can catch with modern gear

    • RE: Not really a "mouthpiece safari" but the need for a "saving grace" type of mouthpiece...

I’m not a mouthpiece guru or anything like that or even a good amateur but I do play in a few bands and play more than one brass instrument
      I’ve played a 10 1/2c and a Schilke 14A4 and a so called cushion rim mouthpiece.
I found that endurance is easier on a bigger diameter/cup dimension and a more open throat. I think really good breathing and relaxing go way further in endurance and range than any shape or size mouthpiece.
Another thing I’ve been guilty of the sops up energy and kills range is holding back. Really blow and be heard. Your trumpet is not as loud in front of it 4 yards out as it is to you behind the bell 19”-20”.
Kinda like playing a guitar gig. You gotta move your amp away from you to really hear yourself but you can’t move your horn so.....
You gotta relax and breathe and blow

      Cool!
I didn’t think that would work. I’ll have to put some better pics up. That was just a quick snap I sent to a buddy.
I do hope to be at the next Cincy trumpet hang. I’ve not heard any news though

    • RE: New pocket trumpet for me!

      Thanks guys.
So far no short comings. I did worry that I’d get it and have to send it back until I got one that had good valve action but I got a good one straight out of the gate.
If any of you are familiar with Humana health insurance and the Go365 app you might know the deal I got.
I actually paid nothing for the horn. Just for staying fit and active this year I earned so many points that I got a rebate on my premium and rewards in the form of e-gift cards
Definitely fun! Also I’ll now have a practice horn for in my work van

Yes white gloves came with it.

      It’s a Mendini. I don’t think it’s a JinBao horn though

Just had to have one. These things are way more fun than I expected. I think though I will put it down for the night. I’ve been playing the hell out of it and now my lips are quite wore out.

Got the nickel finish which looks fantastic, just slightly darker? somehow than silver.

Anything different from silver as far as maintaining? Will nickel tarnish? It doesn’t seem to pick up my fingerprints like my silver horns do.

Though they are relatively comfortable to hold after a few hours it is kinda cramping to the hand

    • New pocket trumpet for me!

      Just arrived today!
Finally pulled the trigger a bought one. These things are as cute as can be! Really didn’t expect such a big sound but wow. And the blow is just really open, I figured they’d be stuffy little guys but not at all.
Just spent like an hour and half just putting it through the paces, couldn’t put it down it was so much fun. And it is fairly comfortable to hold. I can’t wait to perform with it.
And there’s just something about the smell of a new horn when you open the case. And the little quick slide and thumb ring work flawlessly. Only needed it for the low C# according to the tuner. Can’t wait to see how it blends!

    • Used prices?

I’m not complaining but why are they so high sometimes?
I’ve bought many of not only brass instruments but vehicles, tools and stringed instruments and after I’m done with them I give them away or sell for very reasonable prices.
I’ve never resold an instrument. If I pay $1k for it then feel I got my good times out of it why should I expect someone to think it’s a good deal at $750?
All the instruments I’ve owned have been donated to schools or third world countries.
I could never resell a vehicle for more than a thousand regardless of how much I paid or put into it.
I’m not going to pay these prices I see and don’t. If for 10-25 percent more I can have brand new!
I mean a Holton (I’m a Holton fanatic) t602 for$250 used. No warranty no store to stand behind the product?
I own quite a few of those Chinese jobs that have costed less with more to offer
And for real when it comes to strings I can buy a super cheap Fender/Gibson copy and literary drop in the high end electronics and come out still spending less than $500
      What’s the deal?
I’ve actually only had two trumpets that came from Amazon that I had to send back. A Mendini of which I own 3 and a Hawk. The ones they sent were defective and remedied upon request.
I’ve bought a couple duds from eBay and was stuck with them.
I’ve always been under the impression that when buying used your just paying for someone else’s dismay the the given product.

    • Eye opening changes

So this year I’ve switched from playing cornet to baritone horn......
Long before I ever learned to play I used to watch the bands in the local parade. The bone used to really speak to me, and they still do!
When I got the chance to join band I did, with the hopes to play the trombone but the teacher said my buddy and I were to small. He ended up on drums and eventually nothing. I ended up on trumpet.
Years past and I did well. Enjoying the hell out of it. Played some first chair in middle school and some second chair in HS. Most of the time I played third and sometimes fourth. My band teachers always assured me that it wasn’t due to my inability but because my tone and projection was really nice in those mid/lower registers.
Fast forward some years and I was a comeback player. Joining a community band and getting back in the saddle. Once again playing third. While somewhat disappointing I was still happy to be playing again and it led to joining other bands including a competitive brass band.
In the brass band I learned what a cornet was. Saw one once previously but didn’t really grasp what I was looking at-as it was just being played as a trumpet.
Playing 3rd cornet for a season in brass band I settled into a large bore cornet and a Wick 4. Things were feeling good.
The next season I’m sitting front row with the big dogs and really feeling like a monster. This is where I wanted to be. I’ve always struggled with counting rhythm correctly and sitting front row really highlighted that. Also I’ve now been a commercial electrician for 20 years and my hands are a bit beat. Dexterity has been comprised greatly and is just downright uncomfortable at times.
This season I’m playing second baritone and even had to audition. Sooooo..... different game all together. First and second baritone hardly ever play anything close in relation to each other. BUT I’m grasping the baritone more-I feel than I ever did the trumpet/cornet. For one I always felt that the mouthpiece I was playing on was way to small, the Wick 4 really felt good!
Now I’m basically playing something with the tone of the bone but I’m able to use the fingering I’ve learned from 30+ years as a trumpet player, and my mouthpiece is in a range I feel comfortable in. Even my director said I seemed so much more comfortable with this instrument. Bought a bone a few years ago but just couldn’t get the positions, so I donated it. To hear the tone that drew me in coming out of the horn I’m playing is such a feeling!
I still struggle with rhythm but am vastly improving. I think I grasp the idea of what I’m reading now better?
      I love playing the baritone!

Anyone else have an experience like this?
I play trumpet in a swing band as well and we’re always short a trombone. Should I get a valve bone and see where I can go with that?

One day I’d like to try to play bass. Good thing is the opportunity is there. I could go BBb bass in brass band because it’s all in treble clef.
Now I also want to start teaching myself bass clef though so I can take my low brass playing to new hights or lows as it were.

I’d like to hear some of your experiences.

Oh and it’s not the baritone your used to seeing in American bands. It’s more like a bigger tenor horn.

Maybe I could buy another trombone and work more on the positions.

Not really sure what category I needed to post in do I just kinda threw the dice.

Also there’s just no discussion on baritone. Tons on euph, but I’m not really interested in that horn for whatever reason

      That’s all I’ve got.
I’d really enjoy reading what you all have come to realize about your musical journey

    • RE: Difference between trumpet and cornet

      @adc

I think the bright cornet sounds might be fading away from the norm again. At least in the brass band setting.
Most are now back to a larger bore smaller bell and Wick 4. Which gives a very warm sound.
Even this year’s competition music seems to be focused more on sound and style than moving the fingers at 100 mph
      As for bright sounding cornets....
I believe it’s because people think there trumpets and pop in a 3c and play just like the trumpet
Cornet is more style than anything
And it all depends on what kind of music being played
No cornet is bright with a Wick 4 plugged in

      Yes!
Buddy Rogers is a house hold name around here. Rented my first trumpet from there.
I play in band with some of there employees. And I’m pretty sure they’re a sponsor of not only ours but many local bands.

    • Metronome?

      Well? What’s the proper use?
If I’m working 4/4 at 120 I get it but if I’m 12/8 at 120 how’s that work? Do I just try to hit every tic?
Some meters at some speeds seem almost impossible to subdivide and play
Say I have a measure with four eight notes and time is marked at 120 and the meter is cut time? Do I set it at 120 and play the 1/8’s on the tics?

For me it would be helpful if someone with vast knowledge on this could give detailed information.

I can’t be the only one that’s made it this far and not know how

      Wow!
Cincinnati has still quite a few mom and pop music shops. One guy around here is actually a trumpet guy and always has a nice selection of horns to behold.
We also have the SamAsh and Guitar Center
We have a few baseball card shops
We have a place called half price books which is awesome. But the three bookstores that were dominate around here have been gon for at least 10 years
And small hardware store that have absolutely everything

    • RE: Professional musicians on this board question

I play in an amateur band that gets paid really well for our "gigs". We get radio play, have performed with a number recognized artist and compete
Our most recent of such was the principle trumpet of the Nashville symphony orchestra. And he singled me out to tell me to do it better. Not just like that but it was a part I’d been having trouble with anyway.
Sorry for posting as I’m not a professional musician

My experience with community band does seem to be a source of frustration and joy.
Musicianship varies big and so does efforts. After a while I got kinda burnt out on this.

I joined an amateur brass band and have really been being fulfilled. Being a member of NABBA means we compete and I think that brings the best from everyone

    • RE: Reasons to collect trumpets?

I’m thinking in my comeback I collected to compensate for lack of ability.
I did the same thing when learning the bass guitar.
Probably had a dozen each trumpets and cornets, it was fun to jump around and play mediocre on all of them. Now that I recognize the aspects I like about their capabilities and my own, it’s just a couple that I actually play.
I’ve not collected any baritone horns and I believe it is because I was proficient enough to practice what’s needed.
Now I’d rather collect the knowledge of playing
I do still have my two Holton New Proportions cornets. One long and one short. Both beautiful and a plus with the short version is it’s sound actually blends and plays well in the brass band setting. The long model (Couturier) model the one everyone thinks of as the New Proportions is nice as a solo instrument but doesn’t blend.

I’m pretty sure I collected to compensate for my lack of ability. Now I know I can’t blame the brass and the collection has stopped
