    • RE: The value of scales

@trumpetsplus said in The value of scales:

I have never practiced scales, although I am proficient in all keys. I play music in all keys. Scales are not music. I know a lot of music and the only example that I can think of of a scale being successfully used in music is the Pas de Deux near the end of Nutcracker ballet.

I'm intrigued to read this. I remember spending countless hours on my 2-octave scales in high school.

Thank you Trumpetsplus, for actually answering the question at hand. Very helpful and much appreciated!

I DON'T play the trumpet. I found this little gizmo at an estate sale and found it quite interesting. Thought I'd see if I could found out a bit of info as my internet search turned up nothing. I figure it had to be somewhat rare.

I'm sure you could sell it. It's kind of a neat little novelty.

A wider rim will likely lead to quicker fatigue. That's been my experience, at least.

    • RE: What are pedal tones on the trumpet?

Pedal tones are good for a beginner to know. I'd say they're worth at least attempting to practice. Explanations above are more than adequate so I'll leave it at that.

Interesting. Does it discuss any of the issues he had with Seiji Ozawa?

    • Question for you Digital audio geeks

I just purchased a Digital Organ and set up a DAW using Waveform free and a Reverb plugin to make the organ sound better.

That got me thinking...what if I bought a mic and plugged it into my interface (using a MOTU 896HD) and applied to reverb to my trumpet as well to get better sounds from that.

I know nothing about mics in general. I have a bit of a background in digital audio as I just set this organ thing up but, generally speaking, I'm a novice.

I'm partial to Sennheiser headphones; do they make good mics for trumpet as well?

    • RE: Traits that make a great sight reader?

@rowuk said in Traits that make a great sight reader?:

There are various traits that make for good site reading.

      1. large collection of memorized patterns
      2. ability to negotiate the diagonal (end of one line to the beginning of the next)
      3. ability to “hear” intervals (different than #1)
      4. well taken care of chops
      5. an organised approach before playing a note - key signatures and accidentals, natural feel for phrasing/breathing
      6. a lot of experience site reading

Hearing the intervals is the easy part. Making that instant connection to which note it is is much harder. Hearing harmonic changes is even harder than that.

    • Progress of Trumpet Boards

We've been up for about 2 years now. Here are some interesting statistics. I have SEO tools which check how we rank. We currently rank on Page 1 for the following search terms:

      "trumpet boards" - 1
      "trumpetboards" - 1
      "olds pinto trumpet" - 4
"wynton marsalis practice routine" - 5
      "elmer churampi" - 6
"diy trumpet practice mute" - 7

We had 2867 unique visitors last month. This month we are already passed 5000. Number of users exceeds 300-400, I'm not entirely sure but we keep adding a few new ones every week.

If you google "trumpet master," thanks to a reddit thread, it directs people to this site now.

I agree. Beautiful horn. Sell it for what it's worth. If you do donate -- please give to a VERY deserving student who will take very good care of said horn and appreciate the generosity.

@tjcombo said in Jackie Gleason Plays Cornet:

Apart from the funny, cornety bits, a couple of things struck me in that video.. First was what a great quality clip it was. Not sure whether the originally episode was on film or maybe it was restored.
The other was Gleeson's character waving his fist in his wife's face on a coupler of occasions. What was funny and normal has certainly changed, dare I suggest, for the better.

Right? Granted, I don't think the schtick was that he actually threatened her, but it's an interesting cultural thing to note.

I liked the message of the episode as a whole.

    • What have I here?

I reached out to this man (he speaks Spanish) about these trumpets for sale. The only one which interests me is the silver-plated horn in the middle. He told me that it's a "Coon" [sic] -- obviously it's a Conn, but I am keen to know which model. It looks fairly nice and if he only wants $150 could be a steal.
