I once sat next to Wynton Marsalis.

      At breakfast.

When I was in college in the late 1960’s, during a concert, I got to stand next to Freddie Hubbard, talk, and perform with him.

Of course it was during intermission in the mens room. Our performance, by the way, was a duet version of “Handel’s Water Music”.

In this day and age of wokeness, it is about time trumpet players get the utmost respect, which obviously they deserve. Without the trumpet section most bands sound like crap, unless it is a ukulele band, They sound like crap, with or without a trumpet section.
The following are the do’s and don’s of addressing a trumpet player with respect. You can pass this chart out to your bandmates so they address us in the proper manner.

    • All That Jazz: Miles Davis’s Onetime California Home Asks $15 Million - WSJ

The Wall Street Journal featured an article with the above name. Miles Davis’s final home, which he owned from 1985 until his death in 1991 is for sale. This is your chance to own a piece of Jazz history, in Malibu, no less, for only $15,000,000.
Another alternative, based on the rough calculation that Trumpet Boards has about 430 members signed up would be, if we all chipped in $35,000, we could purchase the house free and clear and make it the “TrumpetBoards.Com World Headquarters”. I would be happy to live on site to make sure the beach was properly raked to a smooth texture and the tide kept on schedule.

    • Jamie’s Trumpet Gallery

The sign below it’s in the parking lot of a boutique trumpet shop called “Jamie’s Trumpet Gallery” in Melbourne, Florida. Jamie, who is. Jazz Trumpet player herself and superb vocalist, deals in high end trumpets and flugelhorns with an emphasis in horns used in Jazz. You will not find student horns there, or for that matter, Piccolo Trumpets. C Trumpets etc. Among the high end brands there you will find new Taylor Custom Trumpets and Flugelhorns, as well as Inderbinen, and some high end trumpets on consignment. Today I played Taylors, a Inderbinen Wood Flugelhorn, Schagerls, Monettes, Martins, Olds Mendez etc. There were many I didn’t play., including Benge, Bach, and Conn, etc.
The store is well worth visiting in person or on line. The web address is:

Inflation isn’t humorous, but yesterday I went to one of my favorite chicken restaurants. Fortunately I didn’t order the Nuggets and Strawberry Ceesecake. If I did I might have to pay with $100 bills.

Good news!!! When I directed the above post to my friend J.R., and asked whether he would object to his name being used, he answered, “Why not. My reputation is already trashed”. Therefore, we should all thank Jeffrey Roth of Miami for bringing the Vuvuzela to light, and invite him to become an active member of this forum!

    • Blessing Super Artist Trumpet

A person that I know, who knows that I am a trumpet player, brought me a Blessing Super Artist Trumpet, sn 107XXX (1961), to try for a few days. It has been sitting in a warehouse for years unplayed. The lacquer is in very good shape, there is no obvious red rot, and no obvious dents are seen. I didn’t clean it, but it plays well, although my 1964 Mt. Vernon Bach plays noticeably easier. At this time he doesn’t want to sell it, but obviously, that might change.
Does anyone out there know anything about these horns, the desirability of a 1961 model, and what a horn of this this might be worth. I have looked at eBay “sold” horns and in general the selling price ranges from $90, up to $1,000. From a historical perspective I know that Clifford Brown played a Blessing Super Artist, but it was a 1940’s or earlier vintage.

    • RE: Practicing with drones

@tjcombo said in Practicing with drones:

Wonder if any TBers use drones as part of your practice routine? Apart from the great ear training benefits, I find it to be like meditation for trumpet. Relaxing and a lot of fun.

There are plenty of apps and resources available. I'm happy with the Drone Tone app - the web page has an online drone tool that works in a browser http://www.dronetonetool.com/

There is a good overview of drone usage and benefits here https://billplakemusic.org/2015/08/30/a-highly-effective-and-really-fun-way-to-improve-your-ears/

I used “Drone Tone Tool” for about six months when I was spending at least 30 minutes daily on the “Rusty Russell 19/30 Long Tone Routine”. I saw this in January 2018, revived on either TH or TM. I added the drone to this to improve my intonation. It seemed to help me and it was relaxing. When I have more time I will start this or a similar routine again with the drone.

    • RE: A little humour

A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!' After a few seconds, Little Harold stood up. The teacher said, 'Do you think you're stupid, Harold?' 'No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!'

Harold watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face. 'Why do you do that, mommy?' he asked. 'To make myself beautiful,' said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue. 'What's the matter, asked Harold 'Giving up?'

The math teacher saw that Harold wasn't paying attention in class She called on him and said, 'Harold! What are 2 and 4 and 28 and 44?' Harold quickly replied, 'NBC, FOX, ESPN and the Cartoon Network!'

Harold's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. 'Yes,' said the policeman. 'The detectives want very badly to capture him. Harold asked, "Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture ? "

    • Vuvuzela

A friend of mine, and fellow trumpet player, who is from Miami, just shared this breakthrough video with me introducing me to the Vuvuzela. I assure you that this is not X Rated, even though it sounds like it should be! It is a Bb instrument popularized in South Africa, used primarily for cheering in soccer stadiums. It also has tremendous potential for legitimate performances.
The first video is an introductory video, while the second is a complete Vuvuzela Quartet performance. I am greatly indebted my good friend, J. R.. I have used his initials only, in order to protect his privacy. If his true identity were made public, the overwhelming response would never allow him to have peace in his private life. Incidentally, there are surprisingly many boutique manufacturers of Vuvuzelas. When I searched Vuvuzela on Amazon, I stopped counting after the 71st listing.

Gorgeous horn! I'm a recovering vintage horn addict, so I probably shouldn't even be looking at this. I've never owned one or played one, but it was always on my short list. (Any pics of your '64 Mt. Vernon? I probably shouldn't look at them either.)
