RE: The star license coming a year from now and getting one
@Niner said in The star license coming a year from now and getting one:
I have a friend in Texas I was talking to about this recently and he has a star on his and doesn't remember actually applying for the special designation. He has no idea how that happened.
Texas doesn't bother with federal government regulation.

@Kehaulani Got a passport on you? Belong to the active military and have an ID? Work for the office of homeland security?
In your case, the best option would be to get a state Non Driver license ID. Be sure to bring all your paperwork for the Star.
Thanks.

And what is that "another form of acceptable ID"? Thanks.

Jerome Callet pedagogy summary?
I can't find any of Jerry Callet's material for sale, not even used books on eBay. And I've scoured the Callet area on TH 'till I'm blue in the face.
Can anyone point me to a good summary of Callet's method? Thanks.

RE: Jazz Song #2 - Take Five
Saw him, too, a couple of times. The guy that blew me away was Joe Morello.

Seems silly to have this thread without some audio/video!
Does anyone NOT know Take Five?

RE: Jazz Song #2 - Take Five
Also, the bridge and A section were originally reversed. Brubeck thought it was more effective to put the, now A section which was originally the bridge, first.

RE: Jazz Song #2 - Take Five
We used to do it in four at jam sessions. Very interesting.

RE: What Does The Tongue Do When The Trumpet Is Played
Then there's the question about using a "Doodle-tongue", or no tongue, in jazz articulations.

RE: WTB Al Cass mouthpiece
Trumpetom - I don't know Al Cass sizes, but I have a 1-26 that looks new, having been replated. Let me know if this is the kind of thing you're looking for.

These are the types of questions that get inside my head.
It will now take me weeks, maybe months, to stop concentrating on what my tongue is doing while I'm playing.
It’s ok, though. I got over the wet or dry lip dilemma fairly unscathed. My therapist says I am making great progress. You know, this is tongue-in-cheek, but there's a ton of truth in it.
When I was in Haynie's master class at North Texas, we micro-analyzed Farkas' book, studied imaging videos, learning the fine points of physiological movement applied to brass playing. "Paralysis by analysis". I got so confused micro-managing the fine, mechanical points of playing, it messed me up, totally. Quit playing for a semester.
I'm not rejecting an analytical approach, some people's minds work differently, but for me, to an extent at least, the mind is much more compelling. I mean visual imagery. A saying I borrowed from the martial arts is, "The body follows the mind". I am terribly non-analytical and much more intuitive.

RE: How Does The Theory You've Learned Apply To Improvising?
An aside ref. the Whole Tone scale, for some reason, unless it's an integral part of a clearly recognizable song, I avoid it. Don't know why, it just sounds so cliché to me.

RE: What Does The Tongue Do When The Trumpet Is Played
Right, just that I can defer to the anchor-tongue players, too. I'm not sure that one is superior to another as opposed to just preference. The tongue controls the air flow. I believe, to keep it most manageable it should remain flexible.

RE: Getzen Severinsen Homecoming
I played the Severinsen at North Texas, in an AF band hitch and in pop cover bands. Matter of fact, I sat next to a guy in a professional big band who had played lead for Woody Herman, and Stan Kenton, et al. , and subsequently a first-call L.A. studio musician who played a Getzen. Wonderful horn. I've owned one since.
I always felt that the Benges were a little warmer so, when I could afford those vs. the Getzens, I deferred to those.
Ref valves , with the exception of once, I've never had a horn with bad valves so I'm not sure of the superiority of Getzen valves.
For their use, Severinsen/Benge . . just what moves you. You can't go wrong with the Getzen.

Please read it before you critique. The article shows what is needed to optimize improvisation. If you do not want to advance your improvisation skills it's your choice to just be proficient.
I did not critique it, I meant that I don't want to put in the time right now in reading it. And I don't believe that not reading it implies that I'm stale. That would be rather hard to know, n'est-ce pas?
