    • RE: Top 5 Jazz Trumpet Books

I can't do justice to Berliner's book, but it really gets into the guts of Jazz expression. It's almost analogous to reading War and Peace or The Rise And Fall of the Roman Empire, LOL.

      Aebersold Play-Alongs Vol. 1, 2, 54.
      Patterns For Jazz, Jerry Coker
      Improvising Jazz, Jerry Coker
Jazz Improvisation: the Goal-Note Method, Sheldon Berg
Flexus - Trumpet Calisthenics For The Modern Improvisor, Laurei Frink and John McNeil

And for anyone really getting into the expression of Jazz improvisation, Paul Berliner's detailed book, Thinking in Jazz: The Infinite Art of Improvisation is outstanding.

Lake Street Dive ((I think mainly New England Conservatory alumni). Often without a chording instrument, which makes for a unique texture.
Not to take anything away from anybody in this band, but the bass player is a monster.

I've been playing Martin Denny videos, among many others, on YouTube.

      😱
Wow, Martin Denny!? I didn't think anybody remembered Martin Denny. Use to see him when I was a tween.

A vibraphonist with Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman was a good jazz player, too.

      That's hilarious.
Although some of that "old" stuff . . well, you can't find good Kiaserschwarm or Obstler elsewhere else.

(Well, maybe some places in Germany).

What am I listening to? Actually, you caught me on a Hawai'i nostalgia night. I'm listening to the family band, Kapena.

The technique may not be particularly innovative but the application, that of sharing to such a wide extent, is.

    • RE: What happened to Jazz programming?

To me, there's a difference between not caring for a particular genre of anything and not knowing that it's there. One is personal taste, the other is a lack of perspective.

Well. we kind'a got sidetracked with the technicalities so let me just say, "Nice playing!" Not just blowing through the exercise, but musicality, as well. Great performance and great book. When I was at North Texas, that book was stock of the trade.

Cool idea. Except for the political crap, there are a lot of fresh ideas springing up everywhere. I hope we don't just go back to our respective ruts after Corona but really see this as a game changer.
