@FranklinD - isn't it working if you go to the top of the page, second blue bar down, and select "To log out"?

    • RE: The New Reality

@SSmith1226 - Absolutely fascinating. Thank you.

For me, there was not much difference, rhythm-wise except the use of, what one of my teachers called "posing" a note; subtle pauses on notes to help define and express the musicality of a phrase. When the music was reversed, these "poses" stuck out in odd ways.

Additionally, the harmonic direction blew me away. Instead of a phrase ending with a predictable harmonic motion towards a cadence, the phrase began by moving away from a cadence and ending with no harmonic direction.

This is the kind of thing I wouldn't normally go looking for but am really glad I found it. Thanks again.

And BTW, I wish I had those kind of piano chops.

Same here. I applied for a Mathematics Professor Chair at MIT and they didn't understood a word I was saying.

Well, one man's satire is another man's sarcasm - if it's that sophisticated. Point is, though, this kind of stuff is damaging and would be taken as fact by all but the knowledgeable.

Idiots. Just goes to show you that people can now produce professional and authoritative looking materials with information when they don't have a clue. To paraphrase, "Let the reader beware"!

BTW, I own that movie about Chet. It takes just a snapshot out of one period in Chet's life. It's not a full, chronological bio. It's impressionistic versus exact fact but it's interesting and a nice way to spend a little time.

This is a lecture by Thomas Stevens of the LA Phil. with some interesting background on Schlosberg and his teaching.

So, while they might enhance some trumpets, they don't enhance all?

@Kehaulani All of us are sensitive enough to notice. I have had rank beginners noticing incremental changes in design.

Ivan, no disrespect intended, but if this is the case, why don't you do it to begin with?

I pimped a couple of my Bachs with something called Resonance Enhancers, and they do seem to work...😁

How do they work? Tone, intonation, flexibility, what? Thanks.

      Perhaps I should've said "enhanced".

    • RE: I Think ≠ It Is!

I sympathise. Don't instrument makers generally account for all the variables and how they affect each other and design a horn accordingly? And when you change various parts of a horn, aren't you messing with the original design, allegedly the optimum balance of elements, already?

Just to be clear, if a player is advanced enough and sensitive enough, he may benefit from changes but isn't most of this just pipe dream? And how many of us are really that advanced enough and sensitive enough?

Yeah, I recall you saying that sometime back on TM when we were discussing recording. And I get it. Sometimes I sound pretty bad and wonder what the hell I'm doing playing the trumpet.

I have to admit that I was juiced at the time but the fact remains, I thought I sounded much better than I actually did and that experience, regardless of the circumstances, reinforces the basic concept.

    • RE: How To Play High Notes

Isn't that common sense? The more air force you use, the more muscular resistance you have to use to keep your embouchure in place?

Hey, Jim, recording yourself is always a worthwhile thing to do. How you sound from behind the bell, compared to how you sound from in front of the bell can be very eye..opening.

An aside: I recorded myself, one night, playing one of Mozart's Horn Concertos (MM1). Didn't play Horn for several years after the playback.
