Those are "slave labor" wages only when compared to ours. How do they compare to their own cost of living?

RE: Early Schilke Mouthpieces
I've got a Model H in the next room. Got it at the end of the 50s. Still has some marks on the mpc. rim where I dropped it on a sidewalk. My teacher in those years was a former student of Schilke and got the mpc. for me. I liked that old line with their alphabetic designations; L=Lewellyn, H=Herseth and so forth. Something romantic about them and the old school approach to labeling.

Thanks. I actually listen to AccuJazz. Lot of choices and it's free.

RE: Happy Birthday Herbert von Karajan

Composer? Conductor!
I'm not aware of von Karajan as a composer. As a conductor he may be a little over rated, and I say that because his PR savvy may have elevated his conducting beyond what it actually was. But he was an excellent conductor, nevertheless. I particularly enjoyed his performances of 20th C. music.

RE: Is a $280 New Bach Stradivarius Trumpet too good to be true?
I think that I might not have expressed it well or read it correctly.
I would rather see laws and policies that protect local vs. international workers. These circumstances have more universal consequences. But that doesn't change the reality that higher wages will result in higher U.S. prices.

RE: attn: Dr GO ref "G" mouthpieces
That was a great way to start. If I'm lucky, I can get the mouthpiece. If I do, I'll let you know. Thanks again, K - -
In the meantime, this is what I'm waiting for:

RE: Is this Chet Baker?
Well, one man's satire is another man's sarcasm - if it's that sophisticated. Point is, though, this kind of stuff is damaging and would be taken as fact by all but the knowledgeable.

RE: The New Reality
George, you do realise, don't you, that a mobile is an emergency device, as well? If you have a traffic accident or a health emergency, help is only inches away. If you have to rely on a conventional phone, you just might lose your life.

@L-A-Horn Well, I guess you could try one of those new Chinese horns in the marketplace, but I wouldn't expect much for $350. If that is all I had to spend I would try to find something in a used Olds.
Just to clarify, Taiwan is not China.

RE: Not really a "mouthpiece safari" but the need for a "saving grace" type of mouthpiece...
It's my understanding that a smaller mouthpiece enhances the higher overtones. But that doesn't necessarily change quality of the tone. Back in the 60s, I knew a number of first-call L.A. studio players who used, by today's standards, much smaller mouthpieces, yet they sounded pretty good.

RE: WHY IS THIS BALLAD ....
@GeorgeB said in WHY IS THIS BALLAD ....:
The best or worse of anything is nothing more than one's opinion.
You know, I keep reading that, but I'm not so sure.
Now it's true that some things are just a matter of opinion or taste. But other things just aren't. That doesn't mean that you don't or shouldn't like them, but they're still bad and nothing will change that.
I get a kick out of the Shaggs. I like listening to them from time to time. But nobody in their right mind would call that good. And that's not a matter of opinion.

RE: Not really a "mouthpiece safari" but the need for a "saving grace" type of mouthpiece...
It's my understanding that Bach mpcs. have gotten larger over the years. A 3C from years ago is smaller than today's. Trent Austin (ACB) has a 3C that's his take on a MV mpc. that he got from Arturo. It's smaller than conventional, current mpcs. It's a superb mpc. which you might want to give a try.
You need to check before you order, but I think they have a seven-day return policy.

RE: Miles Davis 1955 “Comeback” at the Newport Jazz Festival
No, was his articulation at that time in his life different than the way he articulated things later in his playing. I hear a difference, more like Clifford Brown. More reliance on the tongue.

RE: Personality and Taste in Classical Music
That was fun but, like a lot of surveys, somewhat arbitrary. For example, Mediaeval or 21st century? I love them equally, what idiom to choose?
Choleric here also. Looking at the definition - not from the survey but other sources - something to reflect on. I see myself a little differently but not completely different.

Don't forget to tell us how it plays, barliman. I've read appreciations that go from "mid-level" to "very good". I've always considered there should be a reason for the lower cost, although the similar valves are a good sign (as long as they're not the ones that didn't pass QC...).
Kind'a one-off comment - I had a friend at North Texas who played a Vito alto sax, student line. Pretty good bang for the buck.

Butch, I don't mean this disingenuously, but how much practicing to you do and what do you practice?

Arturo Sandoval interview
Well, I really couldn't find a home for this so . .
I heard this interview by Jens Lindemann of Arturo Sandoval previously but on revisiting it, heard some really serious and personal advice. It's only about fifteen minutes and well worth the time. -
RE: Trumpet playing Christmas marathon is over!
I miss al the musical involvement during Advent. Can't play at that level anymore.
My most memorable season was 1967. After an already busy Advent performance season, which culminated with playing in Bunka Kaikan, Tokyo's main performing hall, with the Tokyo Youth Philharmonic, some Colonel showed up backstage and told those of us who were in the military to go home, pack our bags, we were going to Viet Nam early the next morning.
Spent that Christmas playing everyplace Bob Hope wouldn't play. And it was the buildup to the big Tet Offensive the next week. Plenty of "the rockets' red glare" and fun time was had by all.
