    • RE: Schilke Club?

I had a Schilke B7 and I was very happy with it. Sold it, simply, to get money to explore other brands. Nothing negative about it.

I am against a Schilke-specific sub-forum. I don't like a plethora of sub-forums unless there's a good reason to do so. Remember, if you have a Schilke sub-forum, you'll need one for Conns, Martins, Getzens, you name it. A virtual plethora. IMO, it would needlessly complicate the organization of the forum.

I was never a fan of Welk but he wrote an autobiography that I enjoyed very much. You might, as well. Interesting man.

      @Dr-GO
It will be my 46th Christmas eve playing, all of them in Lutheran churches except for 1984 at what turned out to be the last Christmas Eve for a reconstruction-era "German Reformed" parish - I guess too many members defected to those new-fangled Lutherans...

Just for general knowledge, the Lutherans did not succeed the Reformed. They evolved with different leaders in different geographica regionsl, for the most part, at the same time.

Apart from regular products, it might be interesting to research into what people use in emergencies if they don't have the right product available... I once saw an oompah band player whose valves began sticking unscrew all the valves, pour about half a pint of beer into the valve casings, reassemble and continue...

What? And waste that perfectly good beer? 🙂

      Preferably Hetmans 2
But anything works fine as long as it’s not Blue Juice
If Holton oil was still a thing I’d still use it. I’ve heard Linzoil is the same but haven’t tried it

I used both Holton (my initial favorite) and Blue Juice. I also was tempted by Monster Oil. Of these Monster Oil really slowed down my valve action, Blue Juice was just OK, and Holton did fine. However Ultra Pure gives me the fastest action, lasts the longest and leaves less residue in between oiling as I noted from wiping down the valves prior to re applying oil. Learned the valve wipe down technique from Rowuk.

Hey Dr Go - would you have a link/description of the Valve wipedown technique?

"The Valve-cleating Technique"? LOL. It's just cleaning you valves, isn't it?

“Man, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself.” ― Miles Davis.
" I think you can be influenced by other players without necessarily sounding like them."

Word. I was greatly influenced on alto sax by Art Pepper, but heard a playback of me and I sounded more like late Sonny Red, LOL.

    • RE: Best Valves

Yeah, I'm tired of reading about Getzen having the best valves, bar none.
I've had two Severinsens whose valves were fine. But I've also had a modern Schilke and Yamaha with excellent valves, as well as two Connstellations and a Committee. All had valves that were as good as the Getzen.

I know the aim of this thread is personal (hence credible?) experience-based recommendations, but I was wondering if anyone's seen this list. It's a little dated and I can' endorse some, but this list might help someone:

@djeffers78 said in What happened to Jazz programming?:
Not enough people out there that really understand Jazz.

We had a jazz big band come to the apartments where I lived and gave a concert. Afterwards, several people were talking to me and asked what kind of music that was. I was trying to be gracious (instead of calling them illiterate idiots) and I said that it was Jazz. Each of them was a little dismayed said that they thought "Jazz" was music like "that old New Orleans stuff". Jeez. I may not care for much country music but I know who Faith Hill is.
