RE: The star license coming a year from now and getting one
@Niner Thanks for this. My license has a star. Didn't notice it before your post.

RE: Jazz Song #2 - Take Five
Big deal. I watched Tony Montana.
But seriously, I did see Dave Brubeck and Sons on tour in the early-to-mid 1980s. I hadn't expected them to be as good as they were without Paul Desmond. A very pleasant surprise.

When I was a kid....and that was a long time ago... I could tell you the make and year of every car passing by while standing on a busy street corner. And that was before I was old enough to have a learners permit. Now days I can't tell a Honda from a Toyota, nor a Chevy from either for that matter, much less guess the age of any vehicle within ten years. Trumpets were once upon a time distinctive... not so much that way now days.
Reminds me of the time in high school one of my friends wanted to test my hearing, so I agreed to face away from traffic and identify cars by the exhaust note. I got each one right, and with my latest answer "'65 Mustang V8", he said "OK, smartass... what color?" I immediately replied "red". That ended the test, as his jaw dropped for a while. In case you're wondering, I had guessed on the color; we all have our limitations.

RE: A little humour
I'm aware that The Everglades constitute a vast, fabulous, complex river ecosystem, and I'm OK with swamps, too, as long as the vermin and insects therein don't spread disease to the populace.

I expect that this will be an "Easy Quiz" for some; then I'll learn what 3 & 4 are.

RE: What's in your mute bag?
I forgot to add that each mute is in its own Crown Royal bag, except for the derby mute, which is in a similar larger soft bag.

RE: What's in your mute bag?
Depends upon the gig and the folder. Basic are Tom Crown copper base straight mute, H&B cup and WaWah, plus a hardware store plunger. Available are an assortment of H&B straight, cup, and bucket mutes, Harmon mutes, Shastock cup and practice mute, H&B pixie and derby mute, very inexpensive (but far from cheap) Chinese practice mute.
I have yet to find a mute stand that I like enough to buy, so sometimes it's a challenge to keep juggling mutes from being awkward. One of the members at TM made his own mute holder from copper wire. It was simple, awesomely beautiful, and carefully well-made. I searched for it before TM's demise to catch another glimpse of it but could not find it. I'll probably have to make my own very similar to the one that inspired me years ago.

RE: The hammered bell
Work-hardening metal makes it more brittle. In the case of a trumpet bell, I would think that it would transmit more vibrations than an annealed bell. I don't know how much this would affect your horn, as the hammering on your horn is between two braces. However, I understand that a broken solder joint at a bent forward brace between the leadpipe and the bell will make a difference; it should increase resonance and feedback. ROWUK should be able to clarify this phenomenon, as he has experience in modification and design.

It has been said that the best way to live a long life is to have a lot of birthdays.

RE: Pic mouthpieces
@fels Wouldn't "exploded" have been more satisfying?

RE: Set lists
We have a set list. We practice the eventual list plus a few extras. Sometimes good tunes get cut, but the week of a performance, the list is set and there are no audibles for extraneous tunes. We've played one encore since I've been there. There are two folders, practice and performance. Only the performance folder attends the concert. I feel sorry for you having to lug all that music around. I used to play in a church band that did that. 500 charts and any song could be called up at any time. We played 8 different tunes on any given Sunday. I took my file "bucket" home to practice the tough songs (the ones George Rawlins recorded!!) and lo and behold an audible was called. The other trumpet player wouldn't let me look on his music, he turned it away!
Anyway, The conductor isn't going to change, none of them do, so maybe a little cart for your horns and file "folder". This is what I used for years and it is still in good shape! That's a great-looking cart! There are smaller, but flimsier folding luggage carts available for cheap, or you could simply use a small carry-on size suitcase.
