I see an oddball woodwind instrument with no taper after the mouthpiece. Haven't found anything quite like it in my search.

RE: In Celebration of 5/4
@Pinstriper Exceptional. Thank you! I hadn't listened to Take Five in a little while, and this time around I heard a similarity between Dave Brubeck's solo and McCoy Tyner's treatment of John Coltrane's Equinox.
While I'm making comparisons, There is no alto sax player I'd rather listen to than Paul Desmond and no tenor sax player I'd rather hear than John Coltrane. Here's Equinox for reference:

I believe there is a video of Sir Paul McCartney playing The Saints Go Marching In using this horn.
Hearing protection strongly advised!

RE: Jazz Song #2 - Take Five
Big deal. I watched Tony Montana.
But seriously, I did see Dave Brubeck and Sons on tour in the early-to-mid 1980s. I hadn't expected them to be as good as they were without Paul Desmond. A very pleasant surprise.

RE: Travel Trumpet
@barliman2001 Other than the color, the Thomann looks exactly like a Dillon. I think it's from the same Chinese manufacturer. When I travel, my Dillon case fits inside my carry-on luggage, along with a small practice mute, my laptop, and miscellaneous other things. The combination is not light, thanks to the laptop, but it is compact.
The only thing smaller than a pocket trumpet is a hose trumpet, but intonation suffers, you have no valves to practice with, and no matter how much the hose is cleaned, mold seems to love the environment inside.

@BigDub Actually it is Sol, not So... from Solfege. https://www.musicnotes.com/now/tips/solfege-what-is-it-and-how-is-it-used/
Oh, say it isn't so. All my life it's been so.
And yet, I knew about solfege, too. I guess I was going by the sound of music version. And is "sol" a needle pulling thread, I ask? Here's something that should put this in perspective:

RE: Brands used by Famous Players
By request - Here is a trumpet held and fingered by Kirk Douglas, who portrayed the character Rick Martin in the movie Young Man With A Horn:
warnerarchive via YouTube.comIt looks like a Besson Brevete Kanstul to me. It had the forward-facing second valve slide with two button pulls, typical bell braces that can be associated with the style commonly seen on Bachs, and a single brace on the tuning slide, plus the forward-facing third valve slide stop. Those more knowledgeable than I am about Besson - please feel free to comment.
The soundtrack was played by Harry James. I don't know which brand/model he played at the time. I'd guess Selmer Paris Balanced Action, but it's just a guess.

RE: Favorite Music
@georgeb The three of them appear to be playing Bach Stradivarius. My guess would be Model 72*, as that model has been popular with Jazz players, although a Model 43 or two is not out of the realm of possibility.
Louis plays a Yamaha YTR 6335RC these days, according to his website, as does Andy Greenwood, according to Yamaha.

RE: What happened to Jazz programming?
To my ear most contemporary music is either a mind-numbing repetitive mantra of a standard rhythm and a prescribed minimum number of the same notes in the same prescribed key, always and exclusively sung by young males whose high voices have not changed into manhood or a Scrabble of notes sung in an endless, random journey to nowhere by a female with almost no overtones in the timbre of her coarse, lifeless voice. It baffles me that there seems to be an endless market for this crap.

RE: Martin Committee Cornets - Why So Cheap, comparatively ???
@trumpetb Matching mouthpiece to sound concept is a part of the process of creating different timbres, too. Of course, the instrument has to agree with your choice, or what comes out the bell will be disappointing and troublesome.

I don't know I just think that giving the response of "I'm feeling suicidal today," to the cashier's question "How are you?" Just doesn't seem quite right.
Yeah... "I'm feeling homicidal." works better. It gives the cashier more to think about.

RE: Under the radar
Dr GO's Ambassador is one of a fairly small herd of unicorns; they do exist, though. A larger number plays anywhere from mediocre to pretty good. They were all well-made and sturdy. I particularly like the water key arrangement, and Olds put some thought into producing visually appealing instruments.

@ssmith1226 This brings tears of joy to my eyes every time I hear it.

RE: Just Another "New" Discovery
I've always been a fan of Blue Mitchell. For horn nerds, it looks like he's hugging his Martin Committee in the picture.

I'm not familiar with that model, but I did find this, FWIW: https://contemporacorner.com/cornets/regent-cornets/

RE: King Silver Flair - Buying Advice
@barliman2001 The condom is useful when someone asks to try your horn or mouthpiece. Just slip the condom over the mouthpiece, and let them have at it.

RE: What’s the difference between a Symphony and a Philharmonic Orchestra?
I'm going to listen to the philharmonic symphony orchestra, where I expect to never be exposed to the compositions of John Cage.
