    • RE: Is there such a thing as a “natural player”?

      I think that many, if not most, people have certain natural abilities that with practice enable them to do relatively quickly and easily what others may not even begin to be able to accomplish. Does this make any of them/us a "natural"? I believe so.

      Three versions of a fair deal:

      1. Both parties feel they got screwed.
      2. Both parties feel it was a fair deal.
      3. Both parties feel they screwed the other guy.

      @King_Conng said in Favorite Cornet:

      Hello everyone, first post here on this forum. I have settled on an old 1977 bach 181ml strad cornet. Unfortunately, a few months ago someone stole the slides and valves, so for now my favorite horn is a first-version yamaha ycr-2310. The large bore and bell, combined with the right mouthpiece, gives it a flugel-like sound. For the life of me, I can't figure out why they didn't just take the whole horn, maybe so it can't be tracked via serial number? If anyone has some valves and slides for a strad, I'm looking...

      Welcome!

      A thief will steal a penny from you and take great pleasure and satisfaction that he has power to deprive you of the property that you earned, but still considers rightfully his. I hope you are able to find the criminal and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

    • RE: Why not another thread about bigger horns ?

      When I bought my Olds Studio trombone, I had expected there to be some form of counterweight, like a weighted tuning slide brace. No such luck. The tuning slide appears to have been replaced, so maybe the original had this feature. I found an Ambassador counterweight, which I installed, and it does an adequate job.

      No discussion about bigger horns would be complete without this:

      I do remember Western Auto. I also remember J.C. Whitney and Warshafsky & Co. mail order companies; they had two different addresses that were entrances to the same warehouse on different perpendicular streets. The company dropped the Warshafsky & Co. name a while ago and morphed into Carparts.com last year, I believe.

      A rumble seat required a different rear configuration. Here's a 1937 Plymouth, for example:

      @dale-proctor And all are played using the same principles. And if you have the chops, you can play them all.

    • RE: Blasphemous takes on classic tunes

      Frank Sinatra had some duds along the way, but overall, he was the best, along with Ella Fitzgerald, IMO. My favorite anecdote has to do with the first time he and Luciano Pavarotti met. When they approached each other, Pavarotti got on his knees, kissed Frank's hands, and said "You are the best singer that ever lived!"

      What do you mean: "Which one?" 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are different... which reminds me of the joke about the guy who gets a call from his wife while he's in his car, and she says: "I just heard on the radio that some maniac is driving the wrong way on the interstate; please be careful.", to which he replies: "It's worse than that, dear. They're all driving the wrong way!"

      @dr-go You're confusing The Scream, by Munch, with The Bark, which is what a Spaniel might do when it wants to munch.
