    • RE: Favorite Cornet

      Thanks for the replies.

      • Classic story: It was vandalized while at an out-of-town gig. I left it in its case backstage when on lunch break, and returned to find it in its state. I questioned around, but eventually had to leave the next day to travel.
      • It is in nice shape for its age, considering it is in lacquer, but the inner slides have since been oxidizing in its case with no outer slides to cover. I can't post a picture, it states that the file size is too large, and its only 1.28mb. Is there a way to get around this?

@Richard-III Is that a king 1122 marching french horn? I played on a conn 134e during marching season when not on cornet. I always had trouble with the lyre holder's placement, do you have that problem?

    • Cardwell Prototype Reynolds ERA?

Help needed for more info and thoughts on my C trumpet made by Reynolds with Cardwell history.
The serial number is 217xxx from 1965, and I snagged it for a premium when stock from a store was being liquidated years ago. However when I purchased the horn the previous bell was smashed beyond repair (there is limited bracing on the trumpet due to the tunable bell design, so its fragile), and a tech was able to fit a similar holton bell to the tunable bell system to give it one. It plays great after the tech went through it, and has since turn a dark amber and probably needs a cleaning soon. The trumpet is currently fitted with a bach leadpipe and other main tuning slide made into one piece, however it also came with what was explained as its original leadpipe and main tuning slide, with US PAT 3507181 stamped on the reciever (Reynolds style). The interesting thing is that the main tuning slide was fitted with a water key bracket but never had its water hey hole drilled, and the soldered areas aren't buffed on the entire piece (Like NOS). The entire horn is still in raw brass. I know some of the history surronding W T Cardwell and his patent on trumpet leadpipes filed in 1967, and have read his work published in 1966 by the National Institute of Physics the "Working Theory of Trumpet Air Column Design". There is referenced that Cardwell made 4 trumpets, two of which became the Reynolds Era and Olds CHR made for a few years in the 70s before the lawsuit from Yamaha over the tunable bell design by Schilke. I believe this to be one of those 4 prototype trumpets, although some work has been done in the past to fit the bach leadpipe. Any more info or thoughts on this piece of history would be greatly appreciated. I tried contacting the FE Olds store in NJ but they are temporarily closed, and Contempora Corner takes a while.

The entire second valve crook and tubing has been faced perpendicular from the valve block (like other c trumpets) and a thumb hook present on the first slide, and reversed third slide with ring as well. Also some work done around where the leadpipe meets the valve block. All for c trumpet and everything still in raw brass with only one dent on the first slide crook like how it bought it. The second and third valve appear original with no serial number stamped on the spring barrel, but the first valve has since been replaced is suppose with an olds trumpet valve 213xxx from 1956. Super tight tolerances on the valves, even though they look worn. The only thing I've had added is place an adjustable finger ring into the original tunable bell slide brace to hold my pointer finger when playin, visibily with my other gig horns, a Blessing Super Artist, Bach Strad Cornetc(update: now has new valves and slides), and some NOS cornet and trumpet leadpipes later purchased seperately (stored with them for safe keeping) in thier Fanfare Caseworks flight case.

@Richard-III From what remember, I think my set screw on the lyre holder itself was the problem, we also had our music memorized so we didn't use lyres. Because of the placement of the holder on the leadpipe, combining that jutting out and a knurled screw further jutting out equaled havoc to my palm. I would love to get a kanstul g bugle or maybe a DEG, I was just born too late to play on them. I did play when the Conn 134e was new though, in 1991 they replaced the older circular marching french horns in my high school, I remember that new case smell.

    • RE: Trumpet / Cornet, Parts Needed

@N0isemaker The old Cleveland model cornets, not the superiors or 600 series, have 3 slot guides because the valves use the same guides as the other hn white/king models like the master. Other horns from them with the same valve block style have the 3 point. The valves themselves dont interchange though, because of the different wrap and offset first valve slide. There is an old silver cleveland cornet on ebay now, but maybe wait a bit for a trashed one to come up, thats what I had to do when my guides were too worn out. You can try making a guide, but I tried to do the same thing and had trouble trying to recreate the pin that goes through the wider slot of the 3 slots. Maybe a different tech will be able to do it, I know I couldn't.

@adc My first horn, and still love to play, was a King Cleveland 602. It is the version with the curved bell braces, and plastic or nylon one-point valve guides. It is built like a tank, and got me through the marching band war field. It got me interested in other horns from hn white, now I have 2 king liberties and a restored master model trumpet. I haven't yet gotten a master model cornet though. Gotta love those old horns.

@adc It is a 1977 bach stradivarius cornet with a 37 bell. No corporation, and has the circle r stamp.

@Newell-Post On a brighter note, if I have half a horn, can I be a half a member of the Vintage Bach Club?

@Newell-Post If unhinged is referring towards the person that vandalized my horn, then definitely yes. Thank you again for the suggestion for an editor application or program, I hope my post will help others in the future.

      Yes, it worked!☺
For future reference for mobile users, all I did was:

      • Take the picture with phone, unless you already have a picture
      • Downloaded "QReduce Lite" on app store (Lite version is free)
      • Open app, and press "choose photo" on screen
      • Select a photo from within your gallery
      • Choose the file size (I used 0.5 mb)
      • Press "Done" on keypad, then "Start" on screen
      • Then it will compress the image to that size
      • Then use the upload icon on "trumpetboards" (last icon on right of screen)
      • Select the edited image
      • Problem solved

If anyone is wondering, the white circle icon on the picture is from a separate app I had used, the editor app does not do this, it only compresses the image size.

@Newell-Post Thank you, I think I can download a photo editor app, I'm on android most of the time. Hadn't even thought of it since I was using the preinstalled editor, I'll try to see if the new app works. If it does, I'll share the app so others on android with problems will have something as well.
