I thought it was a stunningly beautiful photograph.

But another poster said that it is a painting?

      Morris / moshe

Haha, nope, it’s a painting. I'll make sure to let you know when it’s a photo.
One thing that happens is people look at some of these paintings on a small screen like a phone and that makes it look much more like a photograph.

It is a fine work of art on a big or a small screen.

@L-A-Horn My ACB Cornet doubler is Chinese made and the quality is quite good, though it can't hold a candle to my Conn 5A, nor do I expect it to.

@L-A-Horn Well, I guess you could try one of those new Chinese horns in the marketplace, but I wouldn't expect much for $350. If that is all I had to spend I would try to find something in a used Olds.

Just to clarify, Taiwan is not China.

True. In fact my Manchester Brass, along with Carol Brass horns are made in Taiwan at a well respected factory.

Yeah, a case in point is the Manchester Brass custom ACB Bb trumpet I purchased as my band horn. I got it at a low introductory price ( $800 USD) at the time but it normally sells for $1300 ( on sale now I believe for under $1000 ) It is a helluva band horn, light and versatile for just about anything I have to play. But for lead playing when jamming with friends, when I want a nice warm tone for ballads, I prefer either the 1952 Selmer Paris or the recently acquired 1999 Conn Vintage.

@FranklinD said in How do you feel about vibrato?:

Yes you are right. I own the 78rpm record of this number (Columbia) and it says: With orchestra directed by Paul Weston. This was probably the B-side of the record, the A-side contents a more commercial number: Kiss me goodbye love.
Wikipedia mentions Harry Edison and Ziggy Elman as a possibility.

I have a few records featuring Ziggy and, at least in 1951, he sounded almost exactly like Harry James with that exaggerated vibrato of his. I'm not no sure that is Ziggy playing with Doris, though, because the vibrato doesn't sound exaggerated. But Ziggy did play with Weston at that time, so maybe it is him.

      You're not well-mannered. It's called passive-aggressive. 😁

Sometimes, musicians may become incontinent of urine, especially when playing high notes, loudly. I call that pissive-agressive.

      That's me, Doc...☺

    • RE: My First Complaint!

@Bob-Pixley I know what you're saying, Bob. I would never play outdoors if it annoyed anyone. But my neighbors all like to party around their pools, and my next door neighbor has two teen age sons who used to play in a rock band and they often practiced in the evenings. Tit for tat in some cases. Anyway, my one man outdoor concerts are very rare...☺

@Chuck-Rose That was interesting, Chuck. On a nice afternoon I sometimes practice on my back deck, belting out a few ballads. The first time I played outside I got a little applause and that's when I knew I had great neighbors. But I am careful not to overdo it.

I love the Manchester Brass ACB custom mode. It is one helluva band trumpet at around $1400 USD. I've been playing mine for near 3 years now. I love the valves, the tone...just about everything about it.

@GeorgeB said in So how did you start out to learn the trumpet?:

I'm in my 80s so the sound of the big bands and jazz from the likes of Satchmo on the radio was a part of my daily life. At the age of 14 or so I saw a movie called Young Man With A Horn. I thought Kirk Douglas, the star of the movie, was a great trumpet player and wanted to be just like him, and later when I learned it was Harry James who was doing all the playing, I was even more determined to be a great trumpet player.

Very interesting. When I was a tween, there was a jazz program that came on the radio at midnight, the "bewitching hour", and I will never forget Satchmo playing St. James Infirmary. It raised the hair on the back of the neck.

Loved Doris Day and Harry James' duets in Young Man With a Horn. Matter of fact, a copy of that film is one of the few I have, still. Kind'a corny in parts, but still an enjoyable trip.

Yeah, corny today but at 14 I was mesmerized , not only with the trumpet playing but with Doris Day. I was madly in love with her ☺

I have the movie in my collection and pull it out and watch it at least once a year.
