    • RE: Finally, I amd playing a Conn Trumpet again

Unless you have quality playback equipment, I would consider having some other listeners give you feedback on what kind of sound is actually being produced. The placebo effect can be significant.

That makes sense. Thanks for the advice Kehaulani. A friend of mine is a semi-pro trumpet/horn/ piano player. I'll have him give a listen at our next get-together, when I'll try out the weight system. Want to try out the two different tuning slides, too.

Don't give up. Find a way to keep on playing.

@Kehaulani said in Finally, I amd playing a Conn Trumpet again:

I played a gig a few years ago with a featured guest - friend of mine and a great player - and he had a Vintage One and found it after a horn search and loved it. It was like he had finally found what he had been looking for.

My 1952 Selmer Paris is my favorite horn, but the Vintage One is a close second. The One also has a tight wrap like the Selmer and I do like the comfort of that, but the silver plate finish of the Selmer probably gives it the edge when it comes to tone.

One thing I do like about the Vintage One, it has two tuning slides, a D shape and an C. And it has a CG Conn weight system kit. Today I'm going to try adding weight to the valve block to see if I like the sound. My understanding is it will give the horn a darker sound.

    • Finally, I amd playing a Conn Trumpet again

I played a Conn 28B Constellation between 1953 up until I stopped playing in 1965. I loved that horn and kicked myself in the ass for selling it. I am now three years into my comeback and finally playing a Conn again. This time it is a 1999 Conn Vintage One 1BR-46 Trumpet that I got from Trent Austin and it is a honey.

I agree 100% with you, George. I have been playing in a community band for 8 years now, but lately I am sitting next to the lead trumpet player. He definitely makes me a better player because I don’t want to let him down. He is also very gracious and gives me plenty of constructive criticism. I try my best to only have to hear something once.

Wow, Wayne, that is the same situation I am in, and my guy is exactly like yours. He helps me all he can because he feels down the road that I can relieve him by playing some of those difficult high range solos he has to do.

      @Bay-Area-Brass

I made my old age comeback with a Bach TR300H2 student horn, and 3 years later I still like playing it despite the fact I own two excellent professional horns. I get a rich warm sound with the Bach that gives a ballad that extra sweetness.

Yeah, I saw it on PBS. Great show. Gloria still has the voice and the moves...and her daughter...oh, yeah, she has talent to spare. I love their brand of music. Makes you want to just get up and dance your ass off.

    • RE: Range Improvement

Since my comeback in 2016 and until recent events that changed things, I was happy to just get a good clean G above the staff. But a couple of months ago I started playing with a more demanding local community band and I am required to play lots of Gs, As, Bs above the staff. And the more I play with this band, the easier it is getting to play these notes. The only thing I am doing different now is adding two more notes to my daily morning execise that include expanding scales to high C. Now I top out daily at E. I will probably add to that down the road if I feel it is necessary, but right now everything is clicking.

I think these lists should be looked on as entertainment, not musicologically sound evaluations, and am a little surprised when they are taken seriously.

      I second that.

I've never understood why they work for some and not for me. For me, they result in an adaptation to that note range and I lose flexibility. I find scales and arpeggios over multiple octaves much more useful.

No doubt about that. Scales and arpeggios are a necessity to me and will always be apart of my technical exercises.

    • LONG TONES

There is a discussion going on at the other site on long tones and I thought it would be interesting to see what members here think of them.
In 1953 I studied for 6 months at a conservatory but I was unsatisfied with the professor who taught trumpet. He was nasty and did little to help me. After I left the conservatory I took lessons from a local professional trumpet player who was rated one of the best all-round players in eastern Canada.
The first thing he had me do was play long tones and everything that didn't work at the conservatory now started to work. After a 50 year hiatus playing the trumpet again in my eighties was tough but good old long tones became the backbone of my technical studies, and even today, more than three years later, I work long tones into my morning exercises, and warm up on p-f-p long tones before my afternoon hour of playing tunes. And even after three lip injuries last year, long tones got me back in the saddle. But that's just me. Some say long tones do nothing for them. What about you ?

The Frank Sinatra album "A Man Alone".

The Richard Harris album "A Tramp Shining".

      Little Anthony and the Imperials.

      Dion singing "Runaround Sue".

      Anything Do-Wop.

Love songs from the 1930's and the 1940's, such as "I'll Be Seeing You" and "It Had To Be You".

The theme song for the 1972 movie "Lost Horizon", "Have you ever dreamed of a place far away from it all..."

Lenny Welch singing "Since I Fell For You".

Good taste there, moshe, especially the ballads from the 30s and 40s. I have 6 binders of lead sheets and the majority are ballads that I love to play on my trumpets and cornets.

    • RE: Help! I need to hit that high note!

Well I practice like hell but a playable B above the staff is pretty much it for me, there are times when even it is pretty darn iffy. Fortunately there are two of us playing first in our band and he is younger and has better range so I will sometimes drop an octave and let him have the glory.

On a lighter side: I am doing a search on Google to see if someone carries that High Note Grease in Extra Strength so I can show off to my playing partner as I play a double high C or two.''☺
