RE: RIP Trumpet "Master"
I have learned a lot just reading some of Robin's replies and suggestions to those who sought advice, myself included. He may have sounded pompus to some, but many knowledgeable people come across that way, though they certainly don't mean to. There were times in some of Robin's posts that he actually came across as being quite humble.
I'D LOVE TO SEE ROWUK COME HERE !!!!

residue in valve ports
I wasn't sure where to post this, so I'll try here.
A trumpet buddy of mine asked me a question I couldn't answer. He uses a petroleum based valve oil and he discovered some grey residue in one of the 2nd valve ports. The rest looked fine. He asked what this is and how can he avoid it. I don't use a petrol-based valve oil and never have seen that with synthetic lubricants. Can anyone here answer my friend's question ?

RE: Community Band
Personally, I'd like to see our band do more of the old standards. I am honestly not a big band player. I much preferred playing lead with a small combo like I did for 12 years in my teens and twenties. However, even though, as one of two First trumpet players, we don't get to play melody in our band's arrangement of The Way We Were, I do enjoy the company of my fellow musicians, and do like the full sound of the band when I listen to the recording someone did on their I-Phone.

RE: We're off to a good start
Kehaulani makes a perfectly good point. I'm hoping that as TB moves forward that there will indeed be many discussions on music and trumpet techniques. We have many members here who have the ability to discuss and offer help on such matters.

Along the lines of Sinatra with instrumental (band) is a very hip album, Sinatra and Basie at the Sands (Las Vegas).I may be wrong, but I think some of the songs were arranged by Quincy Jones.
You are correct, sir. Not only were the songs arranged by Quincy Jones, but he was also the conductor. I still have the LP released in July 1966 where it clearly states : Arranged and Conducted by Quincy Jones. The tracks were recorded during performances in January and February of 1966. It was and still is one of my favorite Sinatra albums.

RE: Favorite Music
Ahhhh, Sinatra ! Simply the best there was in my humble opinion. I was just a kid when I first heard him on the radio. At that time he was singing with the Harry James Band, and from those early years onward, his music became the story of my life. He had that special way of making every song HIS song. And though, to my dismay, I never saw him perform live but read many times that every woman in the audience felt he was singing just to them. And as a trumpet player, I probably learned more about proper breathing simply by watching and listening to Frank. A true artist in every sense of the word. There will never be another like him.

RE: Favorite Music
I always liked a bit of country in earlier times, but these days the guy singers all sound the same. The women are different, and Patrick's choice of Sara Evans singing A Real Fine Place To Start is a good example. I love her voice, along with Carrie Underwood, Trisha Yearwood, and a few others, and boy I really miss the smoky voice of Barbara Mandrel .

RE: more of Maynard singing !!!!!
I bought a CD in early 2000 that was a re-issue of the Columbia Chameleon album.. Maynard sings I Can't Get Started on that one, too and you are correct, he can really sing.

RE: Scream Machine by Maynard Ferguson... Wow!!
I won't say anything negative about MF because he was definitely one of the greatest trumpet players out there, but I was always a little more into how he sounded in the 50s and 60s before he changed equipment and style of playing after 1970. He was probably more known for his high range playing, but man, he could do a soft ballad so beautiful it would give me the goose bumps.
Not sure when this performance took place, but here he is with his band . Note he also played trombone, and listen to his rendition of Danny Boy.
