I'm not thinking of an Ambassador to replace anything I presently own... But the used pro models are very pricey, so I was just curious about the Ambassador line.

I look at it this way George, the horn plays great and is very inexpensive that I do all my vacation traveling with it such that if it is lost or stolen, there is minimal volume loss.

@ROWUK your cautionary comment is well understood. My work out is prioritized for increasing chest volume (capacity) rather than strength as I agree that brut force is our enemy.

As for the abs exercise, that's more for toning my middle age spread. 🤗

Yeah Wayne's work has a bit of magic to it.

AND that magic is for sale. You can have a little bit of BigDubs magic brighten up your house!. I have 6 rooms in my house (and one at my Mother in law's house - as a gift) of BigDubs brightening pieces of magical art!

...I noticed very little difference in the sound... "it is not so much about the hardware but the software".

So true. I have found that the match between the appropriate mouthpiece shank and leadpipe bore can make or break the sound generated by a horn. This takes me back in memory to a lesson I had with Claudio Roditi, when he had me try out a horn he bought for $75 at a street sale in Upper Manhattan. I played the horn with my mouthpiece and I said, "Claudio, it sounds like a $75 horn". Claudio then gave me a mouthpiece hand crafted for that horn Jerome Callet and the horn just sang. At the end of that lesson, Claudio took me to Jerome's studio where he crafted me a perfect mouth piece for my Olds Recording. All Jerome did was go back and forth on his lathe at grinding on the backbore.

...And I agree that learning everything in 12 keys is a good goal to have. But the vast majority of the Real Book tunes are in the keys I listed. There are a few exceptions, like Wave and Take Five.

      Mike

That is how Claudio Roditi taught me improve. He had me prepare a lesson from a transcribed solo of a jazz performer and my lesson was to run that solo through all 12 keys. This really helped the fluidity of my phrasing (which is why I feel comfortable soloing in ANY key).

    • RE: reading the road map

Isn't were to breathe a part of musical expression? If the breath marks are not inserted (and there are no inferred vocal lines in the chart) isn't it fair game to breathe as the artist performing would desire? We too are artists and can paint with or breaths and phrasing.

To me, a jazz musician, breathing and phrasing is how we express our voice. Now when it comes to a jazz, contemporary, pop, gospel piece, the words behind the notes should dictate the breathing and phrasing. But the artist still has their prerogative to rephrase the sentence toward a fresh presentation.

You're a blessed man. Not everyone can do this. Some art is so realistic that it looks like a photograph. You take splotches of paint and create something even better.

You too are blessed Dr. Mark. I have heard you play and you take splotches of sound and turn them into beautiful music!

    • RE: In search of “my horn.”

Interesting perspective that "my horn" is really someone else's horn that the listener tends to admire. That was what roped me into the Getzen 4-valve Etena. Was a real fan of Rick Braun, and at the time I was in the market for a flugelhorn, that is the horn I chose and he is the reason why. However, I sound like me on it, not like Rick Braun, and I am OK with that.

    • RE: Easy way to increase air supply for brass players

So George, I do more believe the effects you feel with metoprolol are more related with the cardiovascular effects of dilating arteries, lowering blood pressure (and yes, heart rate which is why this is a good drug in controlling a-fib), which can decrease overall stamina (but not effecting lung dynamics). I do believe rather a weight lifting program focused on chest wall and abdominal respiratory muscles may be in your best interest.

.... AND you are in luck, as I am running a special for a limited time where you can purchase the workout manual "Better Trumpet Playing Through the Bowflex System" in just 14 easy lessons for the special, low low price offer of $9.95. What a value considering the regular purchase price of $59.58 at local Planet Fitness stores! A collection compiled by Gary M. Onady MD, PhD, best selling trumpet fitness author and widely know for being the greatest individual in spewing a LOT of HOT AIR!

Dynamics. Make the soft sections really soft and the loud parts really LOUD! Contrast is your ally for keeping the music interesting. Of course, playing well is a given, and yes, if you look like you're glad to be there and are having fun, the audience will respond.

I so agree. This is essential. The power of dynamics (especially playing softer) really brings the audiences' ears into understanding the musicality behind the performance.

    • RE: A way to practice.

Muscle memory takes devoted time and effort to continue the repetitive exercises on a daily basis. If the effort is put into a repetitive practice schedule, then in about 4 weeks, a goal will be achieved.

However, using Muscle Memory is best applied to securing repetitive phrases to add to performance skills.

To achieve accomplished overall performance skills, the 10,000 hour rule applies.
