That would be me. Trying not to get caught up in the gear acquisition thing. I find music theory way more interesting than gear . . . . uh, well except for vintage synths . . . . and, uh, maybe a Martin Comm. A nice drum kit would be nice though, ahh, just forget what I said about the gear.

    • RE: Who want's to teach me a jazzy lick in C Major(ish)?

Thanks! Good stuff. So . . . . . . . after today's lesson, I'm back to focusing on forming the embouchure and angle of the horn. There was a kind of breakthrough today as I reached some unintentional high notes today. I may not be able to reach those notes on demand but they did feel "effortless".

    • Who want's to teach me a jazzy lick in C Major(ish)?

Ok peeps, I have the C Major scale under my fingers and I can get down to low G (sometimes). Articulation on the low notes is hit or miss.

As my username suggests, I lean toward 50's and 60's jazz as my home listening base. Been digging Woody Shaw lately.
I suppose a major scale may not be best suited for jazz, so tell me what to do!

Here is yet another band that employed the Tower of Power brass section but combined with a band that has an amazing Hammond B3 solo. The combination is just amazing:

      Oh yeah. Very good!

      @N1684T said in Favorite Cornet:

My 400 is here. Original case, even some literature. Roughly a 1959 model. Lacquer is 80%. Only a very little amount of the bell flattened out. Small fall at one time. Wasn't sitting long enough to have anything stuck either. Certainly very lightly used for a 60 year old cornet. After i get it cleaned up, i will post some pics.
I bet i love it! That might not stop me from putting it on Ebay at a hefty price. We will see.

      Can't keep them all......

Would have to build a bigger house;)

      Looking forward to the pics.

Let me know how that 400 is!

Are Ambassadors overrated? Probably, but I really like 'em! Build quality is unbelievable.

    • Are you a fan of early 1900's music?

I am. And I just found an excellent online radio player. Click the link, check it out and let me know what you think!

As a beginner, this is my "favorite cornet". I suppose if I continue playing, there may possibly be others . ☺
I suppose the stuck mouth piece is a small shank but it plays.

    • RE: Unsafe Sax-To Circular Breathe or Not

I read it. Interesting, just keep in mind that Kenny G. will most likely be the outlier here. He can circular breath with the best of them. Could smoother jazz be healthier than hard bop? Another study may be in order!

    • RE: No real gains on anything more than 40-45 minutes of practice.

Good advice, thanks to all that have replied! I did play a little longer today with constant interruptions. My son wanted me to watch old school vs. new school muscle car 1/4 mile showdowns. He's gonna be a Ford guy, that's fine - put me on the list for a new Supra or Tesla.

. . . . anyway, I'm feeling more confident about the duet to be played on the 31st with my teacher. Just going from A(4)up to B is bit dicey yet.

    • No real gains on anything more than 40-45 minutes of practice.

As the title says, my embouchure starts to give out at the 40 minute mark. Once my tone was wavering, I stood up to play which helped for a few minutes. It was then time to shut it down.
I assume endurance will build up naturally if one does not push practicing too hard.

    • RE: How many measures on a tank of air?

Play like a vocalist. Makes perfect sense.
Today, the exercises introduced dotted half notes so I figured the quarter rests were a good opportunity to refill.
