Conversation with neighbor: Hey, Wayne, how are you?
BigDub ( me) : Great, how about yourself?
Len: all right, you?
Person at the airport check in desk, to me: have a great flight.
Me: you, too.
Saying, "you, too", as a response is not necessarily so good.
Try it sometime. See how many inappropriate situations you can find. It’s great fun.
I think in some cases a sense of pitch, no matter how little, is better than what I have to listen to in my community band. One of the trombone players, bless his heart, plays about a half step off.
Can’t he hear that? It's actually painful for me.
He doesn’t come around that much.........that is sadly a relief. I don’t wish any harm to him, but only wish he could hear how off he is, or someone in the section tap him on the shoulder, maybe with a Louisville Slugger ( if necessary).

This is a favorite female singer of mine from Norway. She may be one of the most popular singers over there, but virtually unknown here in the US. A beautiful pure crystal clear voice, she did some of the singing on the soundtrack for Titanic and never had her name mentioned...
I like to say, if I’m in a group, I’d rather be the worst one in the bunch and try to keep up than have to be concerned for everyone else’s playing.

I agree 100% with you, George. I have been playing in a community band for 8 years now, but lately I am sitting next to the lead trumpet player. He definitely makes me a better player because I don’t want to let him down. He is also very gracious and gives me plenty of constructive criticism. I try my best to only have to hear something once.

Memories are good. Girlfriend usually watching MASH reruns when i show up on weekends. The MASH theme takes me back to 7th grade band every time. One of the first TV show theme songs i figured out how to play. I was copying another kid though, but i went on to figure out a lot more in Jr High;)
When I was in High School Band, the older guys started talking about Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. I was soon playing his songs along with them and caught on fairly quickly.
There was a lost albino Dalmatian in our neighborhood.
Good thing I spotted it.
Even mounted on a base with wiring for a lamp is not a good idea for this horn.

I saw one of Wynton doing Cherokee which had me so fooled at first ( not a big stretch ) but gradually more and more clams came out. The thing that made it so convincing was that it was so well synced, the fingers moved and the notes lined up perfectly.

Once again, this was Eugene Blee's exercises he developed to optimize his performance. He was the longest sitting principle trumpeter for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Exceeding in excess this is not. Give it a try. It is not excessive at all.
It takes very little warm up time to get through this exercise series, and if performed entirely in series, truly guarantees preparing the embouchure for a days worthy performance.

Immediate dismissal for that band director too. They had no chance of playing that properly. I am pretty certain they didn’t nail it in practice and then get stage fright....
