Amid Irvin Mayfield's legal woes, mythical Elysian Trumpet hidden away
Bejeweled, 24-karat brushed-gold homage to Katrina's dead rests mute and locked away in storage....This is an interesting trumpet related story of a “special trumpet” and intertwines with the legal issues of well known trumpeter, Irvin Mayfield, and his partner.

I am a bit partial to this one that Celebrates Louis Armstrong:

I just image that beautiful work of Monette art sitting un-played. Seems like such a waste, but understandable considering the reason why it was made. In my opinion it belongs to the city of New Orleans.
Interesting story, Steve, thanks.

Interesting story. Is Mayfield an embezzler whose hobby is trumpet playing, or is he a trumpet player whose hobby is embezzling? Enquiring minds want to know.
It looks more like a commemorative work of art that can be played, rather than a trumpet that is made as a commemoration.

So, Monette got paid $35K for making it, but says they invested "several times" that amount in labor cost, but recommends an insurance value of $300K. Sorry, but it doesn't look like the precious stones are all that precious, and it is basically a re-decorated version of an existing model. OK, it's pretty. But the values seem pretty inflated.

I would answer that as follows. He is an excellent trumpet player, but as an embezzler, I’ve seen better. About 6-8 years ago, I had the opportunity to attend one of his shows at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, in the club that was his namesake. His show was great, and he featured a number of his students who also played well.
Here is an example of his work. This piece was appropriately named for the “Angola” prison located in Louisiana. -
@SSmith1226 I guess he was able to multitask, combining trumpet playing with embezzling.
