Although I was pretty active on TM, I haven't spent much time using this site. This has been firstly because of the non-functioning nature of much of its content using either IE under windows 10 or Safari on an old iPad, but also because of it only recently not tripping security filters various places.

Out of frustration with TH, and the heavy-handed "moderation" that obliterated incredibly valuable socio-cultural artifacts in the form of real time discussions of events such as the Kanstul into BAC saga because some moderator didn't like something someone said, I popped in here today to see what was new. Imagine my disappointment that one of the first threads I see is a notice that content has been deleted.

He who controls the press controls the truth. It is sad, but it is the truth in the adage that history is written by the victors.

People have opinions, and at times opinions can be biased, or even offensive. I also believe most people have the ability to recognize what should be ignored - especially if respected posters counter-post politely.

I take time and effort to post content that might be of use to others; to share and to make available resources for information within the industry and academia that I am very blessed to have (or is "fortunate" more PC to say?) available to those seeking answers online. When threads vanish, I am left wondering "why bother? ". If others, including all those smarter than me, start to feel the same, what does that imply for the future value of content here?

Yes, content that is truly defamatory cannot remain because of the liability that incurs, but why not remove that content only? Why not act against the offender rather than the offense when possible?

Censorship is transforming in an Orwellian manner more and more these days into a "defense" of free speech. Surely a community of musicians can find a better way.

@OldSchoolEuph It certainly can, my friend, but only if every member uses this forum in a civilized and orderly way. In the case of the deleted topic, there was very little fact and an enormous amount of defamation and abuse. And as there was indeed 90% abuse and only 10% content, it was easier to delete the whole topic.

OldSchool, to second the above response, the administrator made a great choice.

Just hoping tjcombo can post the reference video demonstrating more efficient embouchure as it was highly educational as to how top notch performers use alternative techniques to buzzing.

            Hi OldSchoolEuph,
You bring up a good point. But in today's world, people advocate things we'd never entertain and the important thing is to not get sucked in to their posts. To do otherwise is to feed their cause no matter how crazy it is. Like you said," most people have the ability to recognize what should be ignored".
The trick is harnessing that ability before the wheels go off the bus, right? I agree with the Administrator act to remove the post because what was of use was rendered useless.

Just from my point of view, I don't miss any of these threads, must not have been important to me. What mostly turns me off are squabbles that wind up focusing on minutia, going nowhere productive or practical as far as I can see. Also, threads that get overly technical and which seem to emhasise the theoretical not how things ctually are. In other words, for the average reader, just too technical. I'm not talking about musical details, BTW.

But I just mainly turn off to these threads and no censorship is needed. To use an analogy, if you overhear a discussion you don't want to participate in, just keep walking by. Sometimes I don't do that and can't keep out of the discussion, myself, but the fact is I can still ignore them. In these cases, censorship should not be necessary.

Not having seen the most recent casualty, I am unfamiliar with the offending content. I will acknowledge that content which meets the legal threshold for defamation, or which falls into a category of inciting violence or otherwise inflicting tangible harm, cannot remain - it places the site at risk.

Other than that though, a signature quote by one of the folks I respect over at TH had me thinking about Huxley today, and here is an obscure quote I think is relevant to this topic: "Everyone who wants to do good to the human race always ends in universal bullying" - can be applied either way. . .

What exactly are you frustrated with? The deleted thread about Yamaha? To be frank -- I deleted said thread because I received numerous complaints about numerous posts and did not really have the time to go through each post in depth. It was just a matter of efficiency for me. I'm sorry about that. I don't really want to delete things.

In my experience message boards that are not heavily moderated are much like a toddler with no structure -- lots of shouting, name calling, and an altogether unpleasant atmosphere.

The absolute BEST message board I am a part of is tidefans.com and it is such because of the insiders that know what is going on with the program and the moderation that keeps it civil. If the moderation wasn't what it was the insiders would go and we would all lose out.

TBH, I wish that TH was actually more heavily moderated. A lot of great posters (pros and knowledgeable amateurs) have left because stuff was allowed to go too far.

Safari on an old iPad - basically nothing works in terms of screen controls.

IE 11 running on Windows 10 - lines of text do not wrap, they just vanish at the right edge. Many screen controls do not work, or display less than the proper list of options when in the form of drop-downs. Date & time stamps do not display.

Are you sure none of them left because they got tired of putting time and effort into creating detailed and informative posts that would serve those who googled the topic years later, only to see that effort obliterated because someone didn't like something someone said later in the thread?

The cell-phone look is quite apparent and makes the site stand out relative to more primitive tech.

For some perspective on "older browsers" though, I work for a company that will shortly have half a million employees. For the last year, the "new" update has been windows 10 with IE 11.
