I cannot find a 28b Connstellation anywhere. Is there a way to "create" one?

I'm just getting back to playing and the chops are back playing a Blessing intermediate horn. Now it's time to buy a pro horn. I had a 1955 Conn Connstellation 28b that I was in love with. It developed pin holes so I sold it and shortly after stopped playing. Now, I want to get another but they are IMPOSSIBLE to find. Is there some way to re-create one swapping out some parts on another Conn? Did Conn make any other wide wrap horns in .459 bore?

You might get some hints here: https://cderksen.home.xs4all.nl/ConnTrumpet.html . While availability is spotty, two 28B Connstellations sold on eBay within the last month. Also, you could contact https://www.dillonmusic.com/ , https://www.austincustombrass.biz/ , and https://www.brassandwinds.com/ , to name a few sources, and ask them to be on the lookout for what you want. A little patience goes a long way. A lot of patience may be necessary. Good luck!

The 28b is rare indeed. I owned a 1952 gold plate 28B and played it between 1953 and 1965, sold it when I quit playing in late 1965 and have been kicking my ass ever since.
I have seen a few in poor condition and the expense of re-furbishing was more than the horn was worth. But about 3 years ago Trent Austin at ACB had a 1952 re-furbished one that was in showroom condition but it was sold before I could even make an offer.
Good luck in your search, Dave,. I might add that I have a 1999 Conn Vintage 1 in my collection and I love it almost as much as I loved the 28B. The Vintage 1 may have been modeled after the 28B. If you can't find a 28B you may want to try a Vintage one, if, and that is a mighty big IF, you can find one. It too is rare.

Good grief. That is a ridiculous price for a 28A. I would sell mine for $500. I just got it and had it completely worked over including valve alignement. I just have too many horns.

It is my belief that creating trying to create a close copy of an instrument out of other instruments parts is unlikely to yield success.

Instrument designers had a goal in their designs and they used subtle design elements to reach that goal.

Assembling parts in the hopes of replicating that goal abandons their design philosophy.

I feel the way forward is to research instruments by other makers that also reached that goal and therefore had fewer compromises.

For example Shilke, Reynolds, Martin, Rudy Muck, Bach, Besson, Selmer, Olds, and others. All these created wonderful instruments and there may be a close alternate to the 28b somewhere amongst them.

Reynold Shilke for example designed solutions to intonation problems in his horns by careful placing of braces, constrictions, the shaping of the bell flare, and the tapers.

Such sophisticated design elements cannot be replicated simply by assembling foreign parts from other instruments with different design elements in them, something would have to give, and that might be the tone the core the blow or the intonation.

                    Just my 2 cents

We haven’t had any lately. If I remember correctly, that’s what the Adams A6 is based on,but it’s a much better horn!

In my experience, the expense of re-furbishing is always more than the value of the horn. Both before and after.

I don't think $800 is a lot for a playable pro instrument... Even for a cornet, which are less popular today. You would be undercharging grossly at $500. That's up to you, of course, if you were to sell. Nonetheless, I think buyers today are aware that a factory new Bach or Yamaha has a list price of nearly $ 5000. (Of course, dealers sell them below that price all the time.) Used horns have gone up in price correspondingly, at least to some degree.

On the question of whether the cost of refurbishing a horn exceeds the value of the horn after the refurbishment is completed, I have known many cases where that is not true and a profit from refurbishment can therefore be made.

Even after adding the cost of the purchase to the refurbishment the value of the horn can still exceed the total costs.

Real world example of a horn in my possession in ukp purchase price 200 refurbishment price 550 typical sale price on the second hand market in excess of 900.

So it can be done sometimes.

I have also seen Martin committees on buy it now for 1700 refurbishment costs around 550 and they are commonly offered for between 3000 and 6000 in excellent condition.

It is difficult but not impossible, and it help if you are lucky.
