I am borrowing a Getzen Eterna Pic to try my hand (embouchure) at playing pic in our quintet. Did not come with a mouthpiece. Owner uses one of his trumpet mouthpieces. I just tried my Schilke 14A4a and 13A4a and they seemed ok. Any suggestions for alternatives? I am not willing buy a pic mouthpiece for the trial - though am interested in opinions should i choose to buy my own pic.

I used to use Bach 10.5C with my Getzen Eterna Pic. Also Schilke 11D4, but I preferred the 10.5C.

        Bb: Bach 180S37G (05), Mercedes (80)
Vintage: Committee (54), Recording (59), Super (49), Getzen Severinsen (66)
        C: Kanstul 1510, Constellation
        D/Eb: Getzen Eterna
Cornet: Schilke XA1, Yamaha Neo Eb
        Flugel: Kanstul 1525, Yamaha 625
        Conch shell in F

Most piccolo mouthpieces have a bigger backbore than an A4a. Generally, except for monster players who play the same mouthpiece for all horns, we go smaller or shallower or both with the cup with a pretty open backbore.

Bach 7EW or if you find a good 7E. At one time Maurice André played a Bach 7DW which I have found to be smaller than the 7EW.

                I second a Bach 7D or 7E.

Yamaha has at least a 11A5 for piccolo, that I used for a moment with my regular trumpet, feels similar to the 7EW.

But it will sound like a Yamaha mouthpiece. If one likes that, it is good.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder why nobody mentions here the possibility of using a cornet mouthpiece, with adapter.
I am not a wonderful example of a picc player, but I know several (far better than me!) picc players using this combo.
So I bought a Chinese (cheap but suitable for my use) clone of P5-4. Having tried all my trumpet mouthpieces (I have a bunch of them!) even my Monettes (not the AP or BP that I haven't) I finally found the best for me: a Selmer #2 cornet mouthpiece that I have since ... more than half a century...

I can understand that. If one is uncomfortable on a mouthpiece it isn't likely that they will sound very good

Your mouthpiece choice will depend partly on the picc. Some take a trumpet shank, some take a cornet shank, and some come with leadpipes for both. Stork makes a great picc mouthpiece- their back bores are optomized for picc and it makes a difference in intonation. When I was playing Stork mouthpieces for all my horns, the switch to their picc trumpet shank backbore from their regular backbore made a big difference for me. I recommend staying in a rim that’s close to what you’re used to with maybe a slightly shallower cup. Changing to a drastic rim size difference will be uncomfortable for most, especially casual players. As far as the instrument itself goes, you really get what you pay for in terms of quality. The lowest priced picc I would personally recommend is the Jupiter XO - it’s actually a super fantastic horn and what I would play if I didn’t have or couldn’t afford a Schilke. I tested a few of the newer pics recently back to back, and the Jupiter XO and Fides both performed leagues above the Getzens, which used to be the standby for an affordable picc. I still prefer my P5-4 to any of them, but it sure is nice to have some options at different price points to recommend!

                            Daily players: Adams A1, A4LT, F2 flugel , CN1 cornet.

On this Chinese clone exactly as on the original Schilke P5-4, the water key is fitted upside down. And I understood why: when you quickly remove the slide you avoid hitting the edge of the bell.

Try Stork 7P, if you want to get a piccolo mouthpiece. Not expensive and fully functional.

If one doesn't like the sharp bite on a Bach they should find a Stork to be more comfortable.
