I have made a decision. I found a horn on TrumpetHerald marketplace that I would consider a rather rare & valuable trumpet. It is an Olds Super Recording, ~1941, completely restored by Charlie Melk. I've never owned an Olds trumpet, let alone a "Super Recording," but I have heard many legends about these instruments. It's not cheap but I think I will like it, and if not, it should hold its value.

I'm flying back to the USA tomorrow for a couple of weeks to take care of business (stupid taxes!) and so, I figured I would get the horn while I am there and not deal with shipping to a foreign country.

I think you are going to have a great trumpet. Congrats.

Be careful that you don't get nailed with import taxes when you return home. I knew musicians who would carry a really cheap instrument with them when they went abroad, got the "new horn" and carried it back as if it were the same horn, they had left the country with.

As long a the registration on the horn doesn't have any give-away specifics on the exit papers you could substitute on the return trip and customs wouldn't know.

But exit the county with no horn and then carry the "new" one back could be expensive.

I don't know Columbian import duties but in Germany it could be a rather large and unexpected expense.

Da ja vu all over again. My Olds Super Recording was restored by Charlie Melk. I do love the horn. Wait to you see how easy this horn is to play. It will spoil you in making you feel you have to work harder on other horns (unless of course the other horn would be a Harrelson).

@administrator You may not need a trumpet stand, since you may never want to allow it out of your hands! Eating, sleeping, etc. could become awkward, though. Enjoy!

I've read quite a bit about these Olds horns...currently researching differences between the Recording, Super, and Super Recording?
Anyone care to comment about this and/or playability?
                thanks!
