I heard this years ago, and just recently found a You Tube clip of it. I think I need a new trumpet, as my beloved childhood '67 Holton Collegiate can't make those notes! LOL!!! 😎 πŸ˜€

1967 Holton Collegiate Trumpet --> my grade school band trumpet. I just can't part with it!
1975 Olds Ambassador Cornet --> my new/used eBay special. Sounds great!
2018 Regiment WI-800 Bugle --> my inexpensive Chinese made bugle from Amazon.

I know this is a Maynard thread but I would like to share with you this connection. When I played lead with the Colorado State Statesman, I had the pleasure of having Alan Wise that played with Maynard in his later bands. Alan was on third trumpet during that time. On second was Rick Jordan and coming in to guest an sharing lead with me was Ed Goodman, as CSU alumni. During this time we had formed a jazz funk band that later became Kinesis, which, interestingly with, I played keyboards (synthesizer). Ed Goodman was an amazing high range player and just made those high note ring clear without strain. Here is a cut from their first album with Ed on lead and Rick backing him up on trumpet. Definitely Maynard worthy.

        Getzen Eterna 4-Valve Fulgelhorn 1974
        Martin Committee 1946
        Olds Super Recording 1940
        Olds Recording (LA) 1953
        Olds Recording (Fullerton) 1967

Although this is often credited to Maynard, it's not Maynard. This is a recording of the US Army Blues with Dave Detwiler doing the solos. If I was Dave, I'm not sure how I'd feel about it - either not being properly recognized, or having people think that my playing was actually Maynard.

But yeah, it's Dave Detwiler with the US Army Blues, the premier big band from Pershing's Own, the United States Army Band.

So far we have a Maynard thread with no actual Maynard in it. πŸ˜„

After the first couple of licks, I really questioned whether or not this was Maynard. Thanks for the info. This is Maynard:

            Benge 3X
            Martin Committee
            Getzen Capri Cornet
            Adams F-1 Flugelhorn

Maynard in his prime was unbelievable - even Bud Herseth once said that Maynard was "the greatest trumpet player." ("...in this part of the century." Not sure when Bud made that quote.) But the point is, Maynard did things with the trumpet that were unparalleled during his prime. The first cut from the "Message from Newport" record is proof of that.

I won't say anything negative about MF because he was definitely one of the greatest trumpet players out there, but I was always a little more into how he sounded in the 50s and 60s before he changed equipment and style of playing after 1970. He was probably more known for his high range playing, but man, he could do a soft ballad so beautiful it would give me the goose bumps.

Not sure when this performance took place, but here he is with his band . Note he also played trombone, and listen to his rendition of Danny Boy.

As I noted, the band we initially formed later evolved into Kinesis. This album was cut a year after I left Ft. Collins for graduate school in NYC. So this is the photo of the band after I left. Mark Schloniker (on the right in the blue sweater) took over the keyboards and synthesizers after I left. I did come back to visit that band pictured above and they were heavily recruiting me come back to the group and add me on the Hammond B3 (as well as a second synthesizer presence), but I was at that time too involved with my NYC projects and turned the offer down to rejoin.

So that is why there is no one recognizable as me in that picture.

You mean the same Dave Detwiler that I mentioned in post #3 of this thread when I explained the whole part about Dave and the US Army Blues? πŸ˜† That's ok - reiteration/redundancy can be a GOOD thing! πŸ˜‰
