      Well? What’s the proper use?
If I’m working 4/4 at 120 I get it but if I’m 12/8 at 120 how’s that work? Do I just try to hit every tic?
Some meters at some speeds seem almost impossible to subdivide and play
Say I have a measure with four eight notes and time is marked at 120 and the meter is cut time? Do I set it at 120 and play the 1/8’s on the tics?

For me it would be helpful if someone with vast knowledge on this could give detailed information.

I can’t be the only one that’s made it this far and not know how

      School me!

In the simplest 4/4 situations 120 is the number of quarter notes per minute and the music will be marked
(quarter note) = 120. (Star Wars theme).
Play each quarter note on the tic
Sorry, don't know how to insert quarter note note symbol
Or if it is very slow
        (eighth note) = 120 (Bach/Gounod Ave Maria)
Play each eighth note on the tic

In 12/8 the music will be marked
(dotted quarter note) = 120 (Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall)
Play each dotted quarter note on the tic, the eighth notes will be like triplets

Or if it is very slow
(eighth note) = 120 (Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffman)
Play each eighth note on the tic

So look to see what the time signature says. Is it (quarter note) = 120, or is it (dotted quarter note) = 120, or is it (eighth note) = 120?

Easier to explain face to face, but I hope this helps.
