H.N. White Silver Tone Cornet Mouthpiece
-
I recently acquired a H.N. White King Silver Tone Cornet from the early 1930’s. My standard Bach 7c Cornet Mouthpiece fits loosely and slightly wiggles in the receiver. A “King 7k Mouthpiece” that I acquired separately on eBay has the same issue.
Does any one have any experience with this cornet, of this vintage era, and have any suggestions as what mouthpiece brand and model to order?
Below are photos of the horn and receiver.
Thanks for any input. -
Beautiful horn! Mark Curry http://currympc.com/ has several shank options. Contact him about your cornet. I have a 3DC that I like almost as much as my Benge 3. His BBC series seems interesting, too. http://www.currympc.com/index.php?id=49 mentions shanks for Olds, Conn, Besson, and Holton, but not King. I'd guess that The larger Olds shank might fit, but I'm not sure if the taper would be the same.

I expect that Dale Proctor would have good input for you, too.

Thanks J.Jericho, AKA Rick Martin. I saw that King was not mentioned. I will try to contact Curry Mouthpieces and see whether they have a vintage mouthpiece for this cornet.

I have one from 1939, and a short shank fits best, which is why your Bach doesn’t fit correctly. Any Denis Wick or ACB short shank fits perfectly. Probably any other brand as long as it’s short shank.

Thanks!

Hmm. Maybe you could have just messaged her and saved the wait?
Just kidding, but maybe not. -
If you can find one, the Cleveland C vintage cornet mouthpiece is very nice. The shank contour seems to be unique for that era. I have two of the mouthpieces and the only difference is the rim. I also have a H. N. White C mouthpiece and it is slightly different with a smaller bore size.
FYI, I also have Cleveland mouthpieces for trumpet and euphonium/baritone that work very well too.
I also have a King 7M cornet mouthpiece that is simply fantastic. I have it loaned out to a friend. These are much harder to find that the Clevelands.

Thanks for your input. I have ordered a Curry mouthpiece (Conn Shank) which I believe is a short shank. If it does mot work, I will pursue the Cleveland C. I did look into two of the other brands suggested in above discussion. One review indicated a 19 1/2 week delivery time for one if the brands. I was unable to find the other suggested brand in the appropriate size.

@richard-iii I sold a King 7M cornet mouthpiece several years ago. As I recall, the medium diameter cup had an all-purpose/versatile "S"-type profile, sort of a combination of a bowl shape blending into a bit of a "V" taper as it approached the throat, and the rim was rounded.

@ssmith1226 Please give us a review of your Curry mouthpiece when appropriate. Which series did you choose, and why, if I may ask?

I should have the Curry 7DC Conn Taper Shank in 2-3 weeks. Mark Curry responded to my email inquiry about obtaining one of his mouthpieces, close to a Bach 7c size compatible with this cornet as follows, “ it probably takes the Conn taper shank. Quite a few of those era cornets took the Conn.
Do you want to stay with the 7C cup? Or the slightly deeper 7DC cup?”
My choice was the slightly deeper cup to keep it more cornet sounding. -

A very good way to describe it. Further there is a bit more mass in the cup area. At our last band practice, my friend tried it and asked to borrow it. I'm a little afraid he will make me an offer I can't turn down.

Yes; it has a smooth appearance somewhat similar to an Olds and a Bach Megatone, only less bulky.

I received my Curry Conn Shank Cornet mouthpiece. My actual cornet is at Osmun Music having its valves rebuilt. I was able to insert the Curry Conn Shank Mouthpiece into the receiver of a bandmate’s King Silver Tone Cornet of the same era. It fit perfectly. The standard shank mouthpieces that were loose in my cornet were similarly loose in his cornet. I did also try a short shank Yamaha cornet mouthpiece as well, but it also fit loosely.
Because of the covid situation, I did not try to play his cornet with the Conn Shank Mouthpiece. It appears that the Conn Shank is the proper fit. I will report further about the playability with the Curry Conn Shank Mouthpiece when I get my cornet back in September.
