I only know of Carling Black Label beer. It's not a valve oil, but if you consume enough when playing, you will be less concerned as to the action the valves.

I know Jack and I know Jim. They are fine gentlemen who make excellent bourbon... I invite them to my living room on occasion, but much less than I used to because I have to limit my alcohol intake because of the medication I have had to start taking this summer. Bummer !

Sorry for getting this thread off track,

I have been using Hetman since 2016. Never heard of their black label. What distinguishes the black label from their green label bottles ?

                        The alcohol content?😀

Back on the non-alcoholic Hetmans, I have been using Hetmans 1/2/3 with great success on many horns, but my Courtois Evo IV's first valve just refused to play along.. it would take a pause on the upstroke every now and then.

I was out of oils and needed to order more, and the place I ordered from also had the La Tromba T2 so I added some to my cart. So far the La Tromba is working better. When I would spin the valve around in the housing with the Hetmans I would occasionally feel it stick but with the La Tromba it spins more smoothly. Also no stick-ups so far with the T2.

Anyway, dozens of horns fine with Hetmans and one seeming to not like it.

                                BIG QUESTION ON OILING
I am currently reading a book by Chuck Par Due on Harry James and his music and it seems that Harry had an obsession with oiling his horns. Though he oiled the conventional way that most of us do, he would also pull the first valve slide and inject oil there, and would also squirt oil into the holes at the bottom of the valve caps.

I don't do that but I do oil my valves frequently. Since I own several horns and play them all on a 3 day rotation basis, I will oil any horn in use every day and a half, and the band horn the night before practice or a gig.

How often do you lubricate your valves ?

I was taught to just squirt the oil down the lead pipe and blow forcefully. Has never not worked.

For medical reasons I advise against this as I worry about inhaling volatile residue by placing oil in the lead pipe.

I use ultra pure - probably once a week - every other week i do the clean and dry routine on the valves. I am playing a Schilke X3 -- back in the day i played a Strad 37 - i used much more valve oil then than now. Sooo obviously it depends on the horn. I have a Courtois flugel that needs oil ever day.
