Anybody here like woodworking? I just bought myself a bunch of tools to get started in woodworking, including a CNC router.

I was a carpenter early in my career and an EHS manager and construction educator later, when OSHA programs and regulations figured prominently into my responsibilities.

Having purchased a CNC router, you may not need the following encouragement, but here it is anyway. Learn your tools. Do not remove guards. Do not push your tools (let the machine do the work). Do not apply your tools to tasks for which they were not designed.

Lots of other stuff could be written, but this is enough for now. Somehow I managed to make it through a long career with all of my fingers, eyes, toes, and most of my hearing. Others I was acquainted with were not so fortunate. Enjoy your hobby, but please be safe.

          Jim

"Get started" with a CNC router ?? Kind of like handing a beginner a Monette Raja - except unlike the trumpet, a CNC router will, if you download the files and follow the set-up instructions, do everything for you (at which point you are not doing any woodworking, the machine is).

I would suggest practicing the basic skills, learning the feel of the tools interacting with different species of woods. Hand tools first, then power, then programmable - like learning basic technique, developing range, applying musicality, etc. That would be my approach to "get started".

I’ve been a hobby woodworker for about 8 years. Lots of small items, restoration work on antiques, and slowly working my way to making tables.

Like many hobbyists...we can be very strongly opinionated when it comes to materials, tools, methods, and finishes.

For example, here are one of my opinions.

Painting wood should be punishable by law...specifically jail time. Painting quality hardwood would be a life sentence.

                What projects are you planning?

The CNC router is for specific projects. I also have a normal router among a bunch of other tools.

My father was a wood worker - made the family furniture with a 10" Sears Table saw. I followed (almost) in his footsteps. I have have some tools - but can only be described as "handy".

We have been gradually remodeling our house interior. American Clay wall surfaces. The contractor let us know his true passion was furniture. We are expecting delivery of the finishing touch to my Trumpet room. Will post by the end of the week. (i hope).

I have done a lot of woodworking and enjoy it very much.
I built a dining room table, music cabinet, coffee table, bathroom vanity, other cabinets, two cradles, and a trumpet. Out of wood.

What about working around wood? I put this wall of back-splash in with the help of my wife again with marble tile I got from Lowe's. Worked from 5 pm to 5 am the next morning to complete the project on a cold (8 degree F day) in February. Had to run a heater in the garage to keep the water from freezing in the stone cutter. Did the entire profect (facing wall not pictured) for $380.00!

One thing to keep in mind is that wood has internal stresses due to its uneven and layered structure that, once you start to shape it, are released, allowing other ones to dominate. This can be exaggerated by humidity or changes in humidity. A competent woodworker will spend his entire career fighting, compensating for, and (usually, but not always) overcoming warping. The good thing is that even Murphy's Law cannot overcome the overall satisfaction of creating something with your own hands

If you are just starting, learn to make a lidded box. Use hand tools as much as possible. This will teach you skills that apply to more complex works.

This is another thing I made. A rolling storage cart. Fairly simple, but what made it so much more simple to make was the use of the pocket hole Jig. One of the best things for fastening. All the screws are hidden because I did them from the bottom. There are 100 screws holding this together! D3025291-F188-4C1A-BBF8-FD0A1F12FB63.jpeg
It is surprisingly strong and stable, too.
