    • Practicing with drones

Wonder if any TBers use drones as part of your practice routine? Apart from the great ear training benefits, I find it to be like meditation for trumpet. Relaxing and a lot of fun.

There are plenty of apps and resources available. I'm happy with the Drone Tone app - the web page has an online drone tool that works in a browser http://www.dronetonetool.com/

There is a good overview of drone usage and benefits here https://billplakemusic.org/2015/08/30/a-highly-effective-and-really-fun-way-to-improve-your-ears/

    • RE: Set lists

@Mike-Ansberry +1 for the iPad Mike. All charts for all bands in the one place. Set-lists can be put together quicker than sifting through a folder.
Real Books are there if someone calls an unfamiliar tune at a jam - or if you need to pass a chart to someone who doesn't know a tune. Can take a screenshot and email a chat in an instant.
But wait there's more... With an AirTurn Ped there's no problem with page turns.

Funny story, a local pro player sat in on an outdoor gig with my community band a while back. He explained that he didn't trust the technology and had stories of it going awry. The wind blew up and everyone was frantically trying to keep their "reliable" charts on the stands while my iPad didn't budge.

@kehaulani, sax players are as obsessed with various practice techniques as trumpet players are with mouthpieces.

The statement was not about obsessiveness with practicing, it was about relative humility.

Maybe trumpet players have less to be humble about?😎

...but, semi-seriously, trumpet feels like a "higher-risk" instrument than a lot of others. The sound draws attention, and a degree of confidence is needed to stand up and let it rip. Maybe sometimes with some trumpet players this confidence strays to the a*hole side of the line? Only sometimes mind you...

@Richard-III - you have nailed the potential downside of using an iPad... the user needs to know how to drive it correctly.
The pedals have settings to delay repeated page turns that I found after skipping extra pages at awkward moments. You can skip forward and back far easier than with manual page turns.
Marking up parts is a little clumsier than using a pencil, but is adequate.
The AirTurn devices use a direct connection mode for iPads which, when set up correctly is rock solid.
The benefits (for me) outweigh the downsides.I keep every chart and book that I have in soft-copy in an online Dropbox service and it's available (and searchable) anywhere, anytime on any device.
The forScore app that Mike mentioned also has a built-in tuner and metronome. I'd hate go back to killing trees 🙂

    • ANZAC day in lockdown (Aussie/Kiwi version of Memorial Day)

April 25th each year we pay our respects to past and current members of our armed forces and allied services. Ironically, the day chosen honours a great defeat by the Turks at Gallipoli in 1915.

Like most of the world, we're in lock-down and so the usual ANZAC day public gatherings were not possible. Many people replaced the usual dawn service with a driveway service - stand, in physical isolation, at the entrance to your driveway, with a candle. A few days back James Morrison suggested that all brass players should get out and play the Last Post and Reveille.

Last night as I was contemplating whether or not to participate, I got a message from the drummer in my community band, a naval vet, asking if I'd be making some noise this morning. Thinking also of my grandad and several great uncles who served in WW2 and mates who went to various conflicts since, I set the alarm clock for 5:30 AM.

As 6AM approached, I could see lights on in a couple of houses and could faintly hear the service from our national war museum on a distant radio. At 6AM I played the Last Post for the first time in over 40 years, then after a minute of silence, played Reveille (Rouse). As I lowered the horn a man holding a young child and his wife called out "thank-you mate" from a couple of houses away. A little later there was a knock on the door - a man asked "was that you playing the bugle this morning?" One of the neighbours had been sent over by his wife with a thank-you card containing the message below. That's why I'm tearing up writing this post. It's a reminder that we're privileged to be able to make music and really, "louder/faster/higher" means diddly-squat.

    • RE: Did anyone made a copy of "The Circle of Breath"

@BigDub here's where it gets dangerous - my take is that the trumpet is kind of incidental at first. Breathing is a natural thing and we don't hold our breath after inhaling, the air almost falls back out without any physical effort. Greg Spence's take on the circle of breath is that breathing is like a golf swing - you don't hold the club at the top of your back-swing. Inhaling and exhaling is one continuous (no tension) exercise.
Another important component is not using your tongue to start a note when getting this whole concept working. I think it was a post from VB that started me working on "breath attack" (attack is almost too strong a word here). It's easier to excite a trumpet into making a noise by releasing an explosion of wind with your tongue, but a lot more factors have to be right to reliably start a note just by breathing into the horn.
So circle of breath as it works for me is full, (but not huge, forced) breaths, put the horn gently on your chops and exhale through the mouthpiece at the top of the circle, backswing, whatever you want to call it. Just let the notes flow. It's beautiful thing and it would've been nice to have this advice when I started to learn as an 8 year old.
      Does that make sense?

    • RE: Recording yourself during this lay off

Non-trumpet recording but WTH... One of my lockdown projects has been trying to gain some comping skills on piano. Reading two lines of music along with lyrics has been a challenge, but I finally managed to play and sing all the way through a short tune. The piano was a fun project, it was terminally unable to hold its tune and the tone was lousy, so it's had a heart transplant - a Korg B1.

    • RE: Trumpet Board Remote Performance

This sort of project provides a reminder of the skills and patience required of audio engineers/producers. I'm currently putting together an iso track with my jazz band. We started with a click track + chords (generated by iReal Pro) that was circulated to all band members who then recorded their contribution. Mixing the audio and in particular aligning all the parts in time is incredibly laborious. It's taken about six hours so far for a five minute track. I'm sure that second time around would be much quicker, but damn, it's fiddly work. Then there's going to be another learning curve for the video...

    • RE: Woodworking?

Diving into woodworking with a CNC router is an interesting place to start. The real joy of woodworking (JMHO) is working with hand tools. I do have a good collection of power tools and use them to relieve the drudgery and hard yards of some jobs, but there's nothing quite like watching wood shavings peel out of a hand plane.

Here's a long term project that's nearing completion - hand and power tools used, but not much opportunity for assistance from CNC gear...boat after turn over small.jpg
