    • A great ear training tool.

This tool was mentioned by US Army Band trumpet player Kevin Gebo on a recent episode of The Brass Junkies podcast. For context, you can listen to the episode here… link text

The tool is free, online and so accessible from your phone, pc, whatever. You simply start the app which plays random pairs of notes separated by random, different intervals. Just listen and play. Guaranteed to improve your playing by ear.

I’ve found that after using this tool for 5-10 minutes a day over the past few weeks, that I’m gradually getting better at picking the first note - almost always within a semitone. I don’t have “perfect pitch”. Am now managing to nail the intervals pretty consistently.

Playing along with random tunes has improved too.

      Enjoy. https://www.iwasdoingallright.com/tools/ear_training/online/

    • RE: Rock, Pop, Classic 70's "Horn Bands" from back in the day?

Here's a local Aussie band from the mid-70's. We didn't get colour TV until 75 from memory. Anyhow it's monochrome and check the host of the TV show - Paul Hogan who I believe went on to perform with Crocodiles.
Kush used to put on a mighty live show with their 4 piece horn section and played at my old uni a few times.. I see one of the sax players, Ron Anderson playing at local jazz festivals. He's also a gun jazz pianist and I make an effort to see him play whenever he's on the program.

    • Any recent experience on resuming playing after CAGS?

      Re: Triple by-pass reocvery

I'm one week post triple by-pass and busting to start playing again. From the first post-op physio, I've included exhaling through my chops formed into an embouchure shape and it feels ok. Currently I'm staying at my partner's place and never thought to pack a horn in the suitcase so it'll be a couple of weeks before I can check that the sounds I visualise match reality.
I spoke with my surgeon about resuming practice and he said I could try after 3 or 4 weeks, just take it easy.
My jazz band is booked for a festival in early Feb, two months after the op and I'd love to play there. My role is pretty cruisey, a little solo in most numbers. Thinking it's maybe an opportunity to reconstruct the solos as part of the practice??
      your thoughts, experience?

      cheers

    • RE: A little humour

I suppose I shouldn't look for indications of good taste in a bunch of fellow trumpet players but....

@FranklinD 's post caught my eye and my thoughts were much like @Niner - if you don't like a thread, don't read it. Scrolling further down the thread, I started to think that maybe he wasn't far off the mark.

There are a lot of jokes that I tell face-to-face that, given this forum is an open, international, on-line thing, don't get posted here.

FWIW, I'm more of a Pastafarian than follower of any other religion, but choose to observe the forum rules about religious postings - and don't mock the obviously p!ss-funny and ludicrous aspects of mainstream religions.

The greatest crime that comedy can commit is to be not funny and maybe we should read our posts before hitting submit and ask if they are amusing to anyone other than ourselves?

So this trumpet player walked past a bar....
      (seriously, it could happen :-))

      Always loved Jim Croce's work.
FWIW Jim Croce is of the few artists that I was unhappy to hear Sinatra cover (when he butchered Leroy Brown)

@SSmith1226 some of the critters are selective Steve so you may have no say in the cause of your demise.

Take the saltwater crocodile for example. According to a tour guide in a recent trip to the Deep North, 80% of croc fatalities happen within 6 metres of the riverbank, 80% at dawn or dusk and 20% are German. This may be the reason for languages used on this sign (at the Port Douglas swimming beach!).
I will make no further comment...

@J-Jericho said in A little humour:

      Do Bunyips drain the swamp?

Not sure, but if there were a lot of them, they may swamp the drain.

    • RE: Woodworking?

@BigDub I would like to see a photo of it finished too 🙂 The photo was taken after it was dragged out of the shed and rolled over after the hull was painted. Sadly, I no longer have the luxury of a shed big enough to hold the beast as the property was sold after a separation. These days it is outside and as we head into our winter, I'm trying to get a layer of fibreglass onto the cabin and cockpit before it gets covered again.

There is an interesting parallel (for me) between boat building and trumpet playing - ambition frequently outstrips ability and a work-around has to be found!
