    • RE: Kanstul -- Any News?

Kanstul made it official. Per their website as of today (7/23/19).....

Thanks to all our friends for a long run

And it has been a long run.

67 years ago, Zig Kanstul first began crafting brasswinds, and though the master himself passed in 2016, our family has carried on the tradition of building a broad line of brass instruments with an unrelenting focus on the sound.

However, we came to a point where it was no longer viable for us to continue.

We want to thank all the players who have made music on our horns over the years, from the casual players, the band members, the drum corps sections—to the professionals in the pop, rock, jazz, symphonic, mariachi, and Hollywood soundtrack genres—and everyone in between.

We’d also like to thank our indispensable design collaborators who over the years worked with Zig to create so many horns that made history.

Also, thanks to our dealers and resellers, and of course our private-label partners who have kept so many iconic instrument designs available to the serious playing community.

This website will remain online for the foreseeable future, as an archive of Kanstul history and product information. Inquiries regarding archive status and Zig book orders may be sent to scott@eyemotive.com.

For ever and ever, it was "The King's English." But the old joke during the reign of George VI was that the queen's english was much better than the king's.

    • RE: Eb Trumpet Question

What I was sort of hoping for was advice from more experienced Eb players like:

      • In the upper portion of the range, try x with the breath support but y with the lips. However, in the lower portion of the range, try the opposite (or whatever).

      Or maybe....

      • Even Maurice couldn't make an Eterna Eb trumpet sound right. Just bite the bullet and get a really good Eb cornet such as a <insert favorite here>

But,... but.... the Zestimate is only $1,061,675. "The list price and Zestimate® for this home are very different, so we might be missing something." Yes, Zillow. You're missing the fact that it is a 50,000 square foot house and not many people even want such a thing.

      @barliman2001

Thanks for that, Barliman. It's good to know. (Good to know that he will be back, not that he's under pressure.)

    • RE: Old Film cameras?

Here are the ones I have on display in my "museum." I used all of them at one time or another, as part of my work as an architect. But digital is so much faster and flexible I haven't used film in quite a few years, at this point. I used to have a good 4x5 Omega view camera, which is one of the few I sold. The view camera shown here is a "build this camera yourself from our kit!" version. It actually works, but you would never use it in a professional situation.

    • RE: Professional musicians on this board question

@GeorgeB If you got paid, then you meet the traditional definition of a professional. You don't need to earn your full-time living doing it.

My dad always talked about a place in Honolulu during WWII named Lao-Tse Chow. The proprietor was Wun Hung Lo.

@j-jericho ...but I don't think any manufacturers included a white "back up" light at that time.

Lots of cars were sold in very basic form, with the expectation that the owner would customize them to their needs. That's how Western Auto got started. (Selling accessories.) Remember Western Auto?

@j-jericho I think that one might be a "business coupe." Such cars were made for "traveling salesmen." They were 2-seaters with huge trunks for traveling salesmen to carry samples and small inventories.

Maybe it's a test to help keep out the riff-raff. Kind of like the soup nazi. If you walk in the door and say: "I like your trumpet parking sign" then NO HORNS FOR YOU. But if you say: "Hey, how come your sign shows a cornet but says only trumpet players allowed?", then you have passed the first test and might be deemed worthy to try one of the Bachs. Five additional rounds of empirical testing are required to be allowed to touch the Monettes.
