We all go through unfortunate crap. The reward for surviving them is living longer to pursue our interests;) Almost 20 years ago, i spent 7 weeks in the hospital. I was 36 and had just suffered my second bout with Pancreatitis. Almost killed me. The last few weeks, i had 3 different roommates who all got better and left before me. All over 60;) So i have a number of problems still too, but keep fighting the fight;)

RE: Best Valves
Over a 100 used horns bought and sold, mostly vintage student horns with a few better ones in the mix, and i have yet to see "bad" valves either. If one sticks, there is a reason. Something that can be as simple as a worn felt allowing the valve to go a hair too far down. I had a few Conn trumpets i never fixed. Valve casings had to be warped, or bent, or something like that. But its rare.

RE: Olds Pinto?
People find an Olds horn and read a few rave reviews and think they have a gold mine.

RE: What Does The Tongue Do When The Trumpet Is Played
@Dr-Mark said in What Does The Tongue Do When The Trumpet Is Played:
They read the first few words and boom, the brain is working on solving the problem....
This can be a mechanic thing too. Or just a man thing as my girlfriend points out. She starts out talking about a problem, wondering about it and trying to understand it, and my simple "man brain" tries to solve it;)

RE: Reasons to collect trumpets?
One of these days i will clean out a room of everything. Except a chair, a music stand. And a few hundred trumpets;) Well on my way for the trumpets, just need to clean out a room. Then i can go in there and sit among ALL my trumpets naked.

RE: Olds Super Star
Only the straight through airflow comes from the Pinto design. They are a professional horn in every way. I already have 2, so i will probably sell it later. Should be able to make a couple hundred on it, AND still get to play it awhile;)
One pet peeve i have with horns that have sat with dirty valves, are the black circle marks on the valves from the ports. Regular cleaning never makes them pretty. They work fine, but i like them pretty too;) Just soaked the valve bodies in ketchup and that seems to have done the trick.

RE: Another hunk of metal goes for too much on the good 'ol SGW!
@N1684T Speaking of GW there is a SWEET Bach Mt Vernon on there now. Already sky high though, and it was only listed as a Bach.
