@rowuk Actually based on the markings on the 1st & 3rd slides and the fact that there is an 'A' marking on the main slide I think it is set up for 'A', 'Bb' and 'C'. I haven't tested it yet. I don't expect it to be worth a lot but do you have a ballpark $ figure ?

Huttl Graslitz Trumpet Info Needed - Please
I have acquired a nice old trumpet that I have been unable to find any info on so I am hoping that you all can help me with your collective knowledge.
The horn is a A K Huttl Graslitz trumpet, the bell engraving has Grand Prix, Buenos Aires. I have not been able to find anything in particular on the internet, maybe I just don't know how to look.
I will try to post some pictures soon.
TIA,

RE: Best Valves
@Kehaulani - I am certainly no expert and don't have any experience with the really high class horns but in my limited humble opinion the valves from the vintage Olds Ambassadors are almost bullet proof. From the horns that I have worked on, if they had any reasonable care, these are some of the best. My 1961 Connstellation is also an example of great valves, there were quite a few years that I did not play this horn but I now play it nearly every day, I have never had an issue with valves, only had to oil them.

RE: Trumpets Made ONLY by Their Maker

@administrator said in Trumpets Made ONLY by Their Maker:
Besides Monette, Harrelson, Getzen and Conn-Selmer (and the now defunct Kanstul), I do not know of any American trumpet makers that truly make 100% of components in-house (excluding spit valves, of course).
Kanstul isn't defunct - yet. They're still breathing, but the life support plug may be pulled at any moment.
I am not sure what you mean by 'Still breathing' but when I called Kanstul several weeks ago looking for a part they told me they were out of business and all parts were gone.

Heard Kanstul out of Business - Was looking For A Part Thought They Might Have.
Hi all, I heard some distressing news today that Kanstul went out of business, need a part for a trombone (please excuse me for using the other
"T" word). I was hoping since Kanstul had been producing Benge copies that maybe they would have the bearing plate & cap for the "F" rotor on a 165F Benge clone. If anyone has any ideas where I might find such a thing I would sure appreciate the help.

RE: Did something unusual this morning
@BigDub I believe Amazing Grace is one of those songs that really demonstrates how music is the language of GOD. This is one of those pieces that is relatively simple but if one opens up their heart while playing, it (the song) will create many variations and speak to multitudes of people in their own way. I have never played it the same way twice and I have never played it that I wasn't touched in a new way.

RE: Taps on a real bugle (as per my post on Facebook)
I personally feel that sounding (not playing) Taps is a tremendous honor, I never quite understood this till about eight or nine years ago. Let me back up a lot and tell you a story. Back in my hometown of Sidney, OH we always had a Memorial Day Parade and the high school band always marched. When we got to the cemetery one of the band members would sound taps and then another standing way off would sound the echo, always very moving. My junior year I was supposed to be the echo, when it came time I could not get a note out of my horn. I was so ashamed and so embarrased as I had performed many solo works since 7th grade. Needless to say I never tried again as I was just too emotional. Fast forward about 45 years and a gentleman we went to church with passed away and his wife and daughtrs asked me to sound Taps for him, I reluctantly said yes ( I play my trumpet a lot in church). I struggled with the idea of doing this till the funeral but I made it thru just fine even though each time I do this I still get a large lump in my throat. I will say that is one of the best things I have ever done. The little town we lived near has an active American Legion Honor Guard to salute veterans at their funerals and everyone without fail has expressed how much it meant to them to have live Taps. It has given great satisfaction to me also as it humbles me to honor their service. I have now done this more times than I care to remember and on numerous occasions people have tried to pay for this but I say no as it is the least I can do.
Bugle or trumpet doesn't matter if you let your heart do the playing.

RE: Olds Pinto?
@N1684T
I am not sure of the opinions on TM as opposed to TH but IMHO the Ambassador valves & block were some of the finest made. I have known several to build there own horns and they chose that valve block to build off of. -
RE: Olds Pinto?
@N1684T said in Olds Pinto?:
Agreed. Big clue is Olds Pinto used a plastic valve block;)
I was allowing for the possibility that maybe the early Pintos didn't have the plastic valve block.

RE: Olds Pinto?
@N1684T
I am not an Olds expert but my guess is that a pinto bell has been placed on another horn. The bracing does not look like Olds at all. A serial number would help in dating this to see if this was the norm for the year. -
1920s Besson Brevete Cornet Shepards Crook - Silver Plate - *** VIDEO ***
I am offering for sale this beautiful antique Besson Brevete shepard's crook cornet, made in England. This horn has no silver plating loss that I can find and there are no dents or dings. The valves move nicely and quietly and all the slides are free. The serial number (103 xxx) which dates this horn to somewhere around 1920. Please see the video as I do my best to play.
I am asking $250 for this horn and if anyone knows more about it please let me know.

RE: Newby - Need help identifying a Conn Trumpet
@Tobylou8 - I will send pics but I won't get to work on this till after the 1st of May after we make our move back to Denver for the summer. Could you tell me how to set up my account to receive notifications regarding responses to threads I wish to follow ?

RE: Newby - Need help identifying a Conn Trumpet
@Tobylou8 - Thanks for all the info and your advice, think I will flash it up.
-
RE: Newby - Need help identifying a Conn Trumpet
@Tobylou8 - Yes I measured it and it is in fact a .458" bore. As you can see from the pictures the current lacquer is quite darkened from age and uneven in coloring. I have been removing the lacquer from horns more suited to students and doing a custom brushed finish to make them more flashy. What would be your opinion to doing that to this horn ? Does this have any real collector value ? I know it would make a great player to the right person but the finish doesn't have anythig to do with that.
-
RE: Newby - Need help identifying a Conn Trumpet
@Shepherds_Crook - It plays great, I don't have much experience with "Pea Shooters", I expected it to be stuffy but definitely not, maybe .458" bore has something to do with that. I will say it does seem to be more sensitive to mouthpiece choice than a lot of horns I have tried, I play a Bach 1B most of the time and I tried the Rudy Muck 13C cushion rim that came with it and that sucked.

RE: Newby - Need help identifying a Conn Trumpet
@Shepherds_Crook Here is one that I hope shows the copper leadpipe, if it was replaced it must have been a long time ago as it looks original.
