This wording has long irritated me from various sources about various people. There is ~a~ A.F./Army/Navy/Marine band, and ~THE~ A.F./Army/Navy/Marine Band. They are not the same.

RE: Matt Brockman scam artist
"Does anyone know someone with the Army Band? This reflects very poorly on the Band . . . ".
How does this reflect poorly on the Band as a whole? -
RE: Just an update and a warning
I would, personally, never sign up for a long-term contract like this and for this. But if I did, the fault would be my own.

RE: Band Chagrin...
Please excuse my bluntness but you, over a great period of time, showed that you were willing to accommodate such behavior from your conductor/section leader. You set up a pattern of aquesing, yourself, to them. So, for them, it's second nature to move you around where they feel you are needed the most. It's kind of a play on that old American expression, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me".
If you resented this, did you ever have a sit-down heart-to-heart talk with your supervisors and let them know how you feel?
And now, you have an added dimensinon, that of a choral guy taking over a BBB (how did that happen?).
This may be a bummer or it may be a great oportunity to put things back on course, in your favour. Have you made a sincere attempt to help the new director in how to handle the band's, and your, needs? Maybe here is a golden opportunity.

RE: Proper Embouchure?
@administrator said in Proper Embouchure?:
I learned a simple method. Say "m" like your about to say "mickey mouse". Now keep your lips in that position. They should be a bit moist. Now put the mouthpiece to your lips without adjusting anything. Blow.
This. Don't micro-analyse.

RE: Oiling trumpet
If the valves stick, wash them, remove all of the previous oil, and reoil with a different oil.
There's not that much difference, practically speaking, in oils as some may want you to believe.
I have, for half a century, just put oil in my leadpipe and blown it through. Had many horns, never had sticky valves.
Matter of fact, for a couple of years, I used a mix of white kerosene and 3andOne oil.
No need to micro-analyse this. Just get an oil that works for you and fuhgeddaboudit.

RE: European Folklore Festival Bitburg - Call for Players
Danke, Barliman. Love to but logistics and, particularly finances, preclude that. Love to see my old stomping grounds again, though (Otterberg. Pfalz).

Played there several times. Nobody ever accuse me of ending the gig in complete sobriety.
(Although I still took care of business.) -
RE: Oiling trumpet
Here:
Dale Proctor:
"Typically when a trumpet is new, itโs best to oil the valves frequently because of the tighter fit in the bore, and wiping them down before re-oiling is a good idea, too. After they wear in a bit, I donโt think they will need oiling quite as much, but oiling a little too much is better than not enough."I periodically pour oil down my lead pipe and blow it through the horn. Then fuggetaboutit.
Been doing it this was for half a century.

RE: Vuvuzela
Thank you. That just took 3:30 off the end of my life.

RE: Martin Committee
I have had three Committtees, all good horns. Better than other horns I've also had? No. And I kept exchanging them for different horns.
I suppose there are two factors. 1) how do you want to use it? 2) do you have "mad money"?

RE: Calicchio trumpets
Anthony, if Committees were that much better than many other horns, why do you think most professionals do not play Committees?

RE: HELP!! Trying to trace a very special cornet!
". . . put together from odds and ends of failed oompah bands, with an average age of between 60 and 90, and fell apart . . . ".
Funny. I think I know that band. -
RE: HELP!! Trying to trace a very special cornet!
Barliman, you don't know who Alison Balsom is?
https://www.alisonbalsom.com/BTW, she did play in a Munich brass band.
I'm sure she might help if she can, but I would be patient. With her recording and touring schedule, I would think an inquiry might take some time to get an answer. Good luck.

RE: Old vintage maintenance.Conn
Scientifically, I can't answer your question. But, practically, I oil my valves by putting oil into my leadpipe and blowing it through my horn and in half a century, I've never had a horn with red rot. This is in a range of horns from brand new to the turn of the 1900s.

RE: Oiling your trumpet.
As anyone used to reading my posts would know that I am a minimalist - I think there's way too much micro-analysing and over-thinking on things trumpet,
So, with that being said - I don't oil my valves individually. Maybe once a week, I blow some oil from my mouthpipe through the entire horn and out the bell. Been doing this since Jr. H.S. and that was a long time ago.
I do think, though, that the oil makes a difference, so use that judiciously. (And even speaking of minimalist oil, for several years my oil was a mixture of 3-in-One oil and White Kerosine. Fuggataboutit.)
