@Comeback said in Reasons to NOT Collect Trumpets:

So, my reasons for not collecting trumpets:

      Let me add another:

      • Collections are risky - Collectable objects are attractive objects to steal. In case of a burglary or fire, you risk losing them.

Of course, this goes for any wordly possession, but I've heard this exact reason from an acquaintance who was thinning out his herd. If looking to invest money, invest in something that's not in your house. Imagine if your house were to burn down, you would lose you player instruments and your life savings! Whereas if you have your savings in alternative investments (stockmarket, gold...) if your house burns down you can still liquidate your investments.

@Dr-Mark said in Håkan Hardenberger: How To Anticipate Pitch And Breathe:

One of the things that's noticeable (from my perspective) is that Hakan knows how to listen to the room his trumpet is playing in verses the student only hears her trumpet.

Are you sure it's not just that she's playing straight into the mic while he's playing out "into the room" (ie less direct sound into the room and more reflected off the walls)?

One observation I make is that the student sounds tense to begin with, which I guess should be expected.

    • RE: Tone Centering for Trumpet (Centering & Tuning) Part III

Thanks for posting this thread! I found the link very informative and it helped me with how to think about (and visualize) slotting. The discussion has been slightly less educational but only slightly so. 😉

One thing that bugs me about the article is that if you come at it from a scientific (or in my case, engineering) perspective, that figure is extremely confusing at first. Only after a while did I understand what it was supposed to illustrate: how the Y axis means pitch, yet the orange surface area indicates the amount of overtones. To an engineer, those two values do not belong in the same diagram...

@Trumpetsplus said in Tone Centering for Trumpet (Centering & Tuning) Part III:

Not a fan of recreational (part-time) trumpet players indulging in deliberately avoiding the resonance of their instrument. I have a colleague who bends notes so often in his public warmup that he is unable to start any note in tune. Blog on this coming up in the next week or so.

I think I saw an interview (old stuff, 80's) with Håkan Hardenberger where he describes doing severe pitch bends (downward) as part of his practice routine. I don't recall if it was part of the warmup or not, but I think it was supposed to help with embouchure development somehow. I've only seen one or two people doing it, in person, but there seems to be some sort of "method" to it.

    • RE: Login page doesn't seem to work with my password manager

Oh hey look, I solved it myself. Turns out that the Keepass DB has a flag in the configuration for each entry, that is called "Hide this entry from Kee". Guess if that flag was enabled? Yeah. I have no idea how that happened. Shot myself in the foot, apparently.

Thanks for putting up with a silly question!

    • RE: Login page doesn't seem to work with my password manager

Now I'm at my desk, I don't see anything out of the ordinary on the login page's Inspect mode.

My Firefox (Windows) browser also fails to spot the login form. I'm using the Kee browser extension which is supposed to match the fields up and fetch the right credentials for this URL from the password DB (using an RPC call to keepass2).

You've got an <input> of type "text" with name="username" and id="username", that looks completely right to me.

      It is a mystery.

I can make do by copying/pasting the password manually but it is a lot less secure than having it done through the RPC since the clipboard can be intercepted if I get malware on my phone/PC.

    • Login page doesn't seem to work with my password manager

      Hi,
I use Keepass 2 for password management. On mobile, the app is called KeePass2Android. For whatever reason, the mobile app does not detect the TB login page as being a login form, and so does not attempt to auto-fill the fields.

I'm not sure what the html would need to look like but I think this is the only site I've found so far that isn't supported. Are the form fields unusually named, perhaps?

    • "The King of the Trumpet" - Le Roi de la Trompette

Just some light music, for fun.

The album, on Spotify for those with such a subscription.

I especially recommend the Indiana Jones track. There are some subtle faults in his transcription which may trip up a listener...

@Trumpetsplus Not being an opera trumpeter, I'm curious: what is he doing wrong? Reading the excerpt at https://www.trumpetexcerpts.org/leonore-overture-no-3.html I can only guess that you have objections to his flexible tempo?

Edit: vvv Ah, that explains it. I was afraid it would be some convention that is never written down but passed from generation to generation... Thanks!

    • RE: What's in your mute bag?

      DSC_0177.JPG

My mute bag is a ratty old backpack, so I stuff all sorts of things in it:

      • Sheet music
      • Snack
      • Water bottle for long rehearsals
      • 4-mouthpiece holster with whatever I think I'll need that day. (Usually only two pieces in there unless I'm doubling)
      • Jo-Ral copper bubble (harmon)
      • Best Brass mini straight mute
      • Denis Wick adjustable aluminum cup
      • H&B bucket
      • Rubber plunger

I find the music nearly never calls for anything else. Derby hat can be emulated by playing into the music stand, and no conductor has ever complained to the section over it.

I would like to replace the bucket with something else that's easier to put on quickly. But I'm not sure I can justify the expense, plus right now we have matching red&white buckets across the section.

The Bubble mute is really better in aluminum, I think. Copper is so heavy it falls out easily. I got it as a gift 18 years ago and somehow still didn't wear it out.

The mini straight is used as a straight, it sounds nearly identical to my larger DW straight. It sits further up the bell but seems to do the same thing. It's also small enough to use on plunger solos, for variety.

    • RE: Jazz Song #1 - A Night In Tunisia

I thought it was an instrumental tune. Who wrote the lyrics, and who recorded them?

I like the tune a lot. We picked it up in my big band, and it's turned out to be a real crowd pleaser. I wouldn't have thought so, given how close it is to bebop.

I hope you didn't miss Arturo's take on it, on the album Tumbaito.

      • Baltimore Brass:
        https://www.baltimorebrass.net/index.php?cat=1

I once bought an Olds Recording sight unseen from Baltimore Brass. Or rather, I'd seen pictures but not played it. Got it just as described and the price was right. So, in summary, recommended.

1 other shop that I’ve viewed often, but never purchased from is Schmitt Music’s Trumpet Shop. Anyone have experience with them?
      https://www.schmittmusic.com/trumpet-shop/

Never bought an instrument from them but got great service when I needed a cheap double case in Minneapolis on short notice. They sold me an old Yamaha double they used to transport horns to trade shows etc. Great value and excellent communications by email with Mark Bobnick (mind you, this was in 2014). Can you believe they only charged me $25 for the case?

    • RE: What about non-trumpet Brass players

I sometimes play in a locally traditional brass sextett. Depending on who shows up for rehearsal, we pick up whatever part we feel like, or which is available. Cornets in Eb and Bb, alto horn in Eb, tenor horns 1 and 2 in Bb, or tuba. Everyone has developed some proficiency on each horn, but we tend to stick to our "end" of the ensemble. The Eb cornet takes more high-end chops than the trombonists can handle, normally.

I play anything except the tuba - I would, but I would have to learn to read bass clef first! I'm sure I'm a pretty mediocre tenor horn player but since the music is written in treble clef, I can just sit down and play the same way as on a trumpet.

Alto horn would probably be my favourite instrument if it wasn't for the rather dull parts you get. It's nearly all accompanying figures on the backbeat. The pah in ompah, if you will. I gather it's the same if you play french horn in a band. Horn parts in a symphony, though, that would be something...

    • RE: The hammered bell

@Kehaulani Surely it adds labor, but it would be considerably quicker than doing extensive engraving, and some makers did that routinely in the old days. Maybe cosmetics was an important competitive edge to have?

Those pictures sort of remind me of reproduction natural trumpets. The old masters (16th and 17th century) often would scrape the brass of the bell and tubing. We got to do this in the International Trumpet Making Workshop using a "knife" with a triangular cross-section. I was pretty nervous about removing too much material!

Did you try emailing B&S customer service? Since they are still in business, that seems like the easiest way to go, to me. They are German, but a company their size can surely answer emails in English.
