@bigdub That's on the bell tail. It's called a microtuner, or "opera glass" tuner. Turn the screw to tune up or down in small increments.

@ssmith1226 said in Funny story that's sort of trumpet related...:
Of course it was during intermission in the mens room. Our performance, by the way, was a duet version of “Handel’s Water Music”.
A friend of mine at University got invited as a student representative at the Nobel Prize dinner. Yes, they do that, dozens of students attend every year. There's a lottery for it. Anyway, he ended up at the urinal next to His Majesty the King of Sweden. He mentioned being slightly intimidated but declined to comment on what piece was performed or any other details.
Discretion, always discretion, he told me.

I bet you ain't never heard the Surprise Symphony quite this ... surprising! (Give it a minute of your day, it's worth it. Subtle yet not.)

RE: Password expiry - why?
@administrator Thanks for answering!
I prefer not to link every online identity together - It's far too easy to get arbitrarily disconnected from your Facebook account. I just don't trust the tech giants like I used to.
I can live with changing the password once a year (or is it every two years?). Just curious if there was any particular reason for it, but now I know!

Password expiry - why?
Hi,
Any particular reason why passwords on this site expire?I ask because the current consensus among security experts seems to be that it's a counterproductive practice.
Microsoft gives a good summary of the arguments:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/admin/misc/password-policy-recommendations?view=o365-worldwidePassword expiration requirements do more harm than good, because these requirements make users select predictable passwords, composed of sequential words and numbers which are closely related to each other. In these cases, the next password can be predicted based on the previous password. Password expiration requirements offer no containment benefits because cyber criminals almost always use credentials as soon as they compromise them.
A very good modern way to safeguard our credentials would be to check them against https://haveibeenpwned.com/ or similar service, something even the NIST is now recommending.

I once saw a bunch of brass players who decided to play while submerged in a city fountain. Only the bells were above the water.
I guess it wasn’t these guys. They do this fountain gig every year on the day they turn the water on for summer.
Speak about blasphemous takes on classic tunes, by the way!

RE: Band Re-start for Fall
My one band has been cancelled for a year and a half.
The other band picked up rehearsals last fall when there was a lull in cases, and then as cases increased in Novemer, went full outdoors mode. Rehearsals on the regular time, in a park, whenever temperature was above freezing and no rain. About half the band shows up, but that's still enough to be playable and enjoyable. Even some of the old-timers started turning up again after they got their shots.
I don't hold out much hope for the former band ever getting started in earnest again...

OK so I just heard this and it fits too well in this theme not to post it.
Take your favorite classical tracks, play them with a heavy metal drum beat at 1.2 x the tempo. Instant album!

@barliman2001 Was that Vladimir Belushi doing the male vocal?
It would rather be his cousin Murat Belushi (Or is that Murat Blues?). I'm pretty sure I heard some Turkish spoken near the end there.
I liked it, my only gripes would be technical: The lipsyncing and the way they hard-panned the twins to left and right respectively made for a weird headphone listening experience.

That Sinatra clip was way too good. Sinatra at his worst was still better than many artists. Time for something truly atrocious.
I bet the mic was never supposed to be hot...

Oh man I am just finding so much good stuff...
How about some Splanky on a somewhat unusual ensemble?
Edit: I don't know why this video won't embed...

@newell-post Syphilis was one hell of a disease. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy - but that lady did produce some good entertainment for posteriority!
Here's something you might not have heard before... Tchaikovsky's piano concerto - inverted ?
I can heartily recommend all the content on that youtube channel. The older stuff is mostly this kind of "Hoffnungesque" jokery.

RE: Blasphemous takes on classic tunes
How about something more topical to this board?

RE: Blasphemous takes on classic tunes
@bigdub Looks to me like we're on complete agreement. In poor taste but skillfully performed.
Now here's something else in that vein... I really can't fault the skill of anyone involved but is this any way to treat Mozart?

How are deleted accounts handled?
I see a few posts from “A former user”. I think I can infer from context who these users are, but sometimes it makes a thread pretty hard to follow, especially if there are more than one deleted users posting in one thread.
I don’t know if these users were banned by admin/mod or if they deleted their own account.
I don’t think I’ve seen another forums software that removed people’s names this way when they were deleted. I don’t think it’s necessarily the best approach since it messes with the readability of old threads. What would work better would be to keep displaying their user name, but put a label or suffix somewhere that marks them as deleted. That way, we avoid people replying to them and expecting answers.
What do you think about this, @administrator ?

RE: Blasphemous takes on classic tunes
This one, I actually kind of enjoy because they obviously love the source material and are playing with it in a pretty virtuoso way. I think the use of contrabassoon here is quite inspired.
But I played it to some people who absolutely hated it! So I think it still fits the theme of the thread.

RE: Blasphemous takes on classic tunes
How about some Mary Schneider? I guess all her recordings could be considered blasphemous towards the source material.
There's a lot of skill on display here but what amazes me is that no one seems to have stopped to ask "should we really do this?". None of this is easy to do and those are professional musicians, playing professionally arranged music, in professional TV makeup and wardrobe etc.

RE: Blasphemous takes on classic tunes
I'm pretty sure that could be called a punk performance. Intentionally bad, just to provoke people.
Wasn't that kind of her thing, too? I was too young to get any enjoyment from her TV show so I have no idea what it was about.
I wonder who the heck booked her for that gig, and what they thought she was gonna do... -

No comment on that video.
Use this thread for covers that should never have been performed, or at least never caught on video.
