The trial of Lynn Fogarty began last Monday. Jury selection took the better part of three days, due to a special request granted to the defense attorney by the Judge. The jury did not hear the case, as the defendant, as a result of a plea bargain, pleaded guilty to the crime of Voluntary Manslaughter rather than be tried for First Degree Murder. Her sentencing is scheduled for April 3 of this year. The possibilities/options range from 1 - 10 years in prison.

For those of us who don't like to scrub out horns on a regular basis, one good scrub, followed by Herco Spitballs once a week will keep the nasties out, especially when combined with good oral hygiene. The only horns I have to scrub are the newly acquired ones. Once done, I inspect the insides periodically to find them clean every time.

@mike-ansberry How close does the tuning slides come to bottoming out in the outer slides when the tuning slide is pushed all the way in? To put it another way, how much longer are the inside lengths of the outer slides, compared to the lengths of the inner slide legs of the tuning slide itself? What is the mouthpiece gap? Does the mouthpiece receiver have the correct taper? Does the horn play a different pitch with a different mouthpiece? It seems like a little adjustment in the right places should resolve the issue.

Is it possible that the trumpet got assembled with a longer bell stem? Could the bell stem not have been pushed all the way into the ferrule at the factory? They used to certify that the horn would play in tune with the tuning slide out a certain amount at a certain ambient temperature (5/8" at 70° F?), so I would think that this type of situation could be discovered.

A qualified teacher can resolve a lot of mysteries for you and keep you on track to avoid mistakes and techniques you'd have to unlearn as you try to improve. At least start with a cyber trip to eBay, and purchase a Rubank Elementary Cornet & Trumpet Method book. It's the first of a series, and it provides the necessary musical perspective you're looking for. Besides, these Rubank books usually cost well under $10, including shipping.

@dr-go Uhhhh... I hate to break this to you, but it takes eight .125" measurements to make an inch, not four. Nevertheless, a 1/8" difference can be a part of this puzzle.

"… is that it speaks with unquestioning confidence, even when it’s wrong." I think it's safe to say we all know people like this, too. Perhaps there should be an additional category called ALOI (Artificial Lack Of Intelligence).

Are we at the point at which we have conversations with programs designed to replicate the presence of humans? How profoundly does the development of this technology affect the nature of communication? Are there aspects of this path that will reveal a less than desirable journey and or destination? Will asking programs such as http://chat.openai.com/ these questions reveal reliable answers? Who's running the show, anyway? And what are their intentions? Bots are getting scary, indeed.

Couple in their eighties are both having problems remembering things. During a check-up, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.

Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks.
'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?'
      'Sure.'
'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks.
      'No, I can remember it.'
'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?'
He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.'
'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that write it down?' she asks.
Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!'

Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment.
      'Where's my toast?'

    • RE: Customized Olds Recording Model

It looks like a solution to a problem that needed to be addressed by the techniques and skills of the player, not by adding a questionable, possibly detrimental, and undoubtedly expensive appendage to a trumpet that plays superbly without such modification.
