@GeorgeB For things at the limit of what I can play (recently 1st trumpet in the orchestra version of Rimsky-Korsakovs Scheherezade), my standard take is to completely memorize the difficult licks. Once I have freed up my eyes, they do not slow my fingers or tongue down any more! 😉

And that makes a lot of sense.

Original performance by the composer and his band:

Last night's practice went well. The MD slowed the tempo a tad ( I'd say to about the same tempo as heard in Kehaulani's link above ). I only flubbed a couple of places early in the first third of the arrangement. I'm getting there, by golly.

You know, if you're having finger-speed problems on Liberty Bell, your conductor is taking it at way too fast a tempo.

I thought he was and so did a few others, but most of the band was happy with the fast tempo so I doubt if it will be changed. We'll see tonight because I know for certain we will be spending a lot of time on Liberty Bell.

      Jim,
All my trumpets have fast valves so I can't use slow valves as an excuse. I don't think as fast as I used to, and this is more noticeable with each passing year. It happens with age. I just do my best to work it out by repetition of those passages that are slowing me down. It's seems to be working for me now on Liberty Bell so I am starting to feel pretty good about it.

Only three of us on first in our band plus a young lady and older lady on second and third.

Nice to hear there is humor in your band. There's always lots of laughs in ours. That is as it should be. There are a few serious dudes but most of us are here for the fun of socializing and playing music with people we like.

Yeah, there is definitely something to that mental component thing, Doc. The one thing, though, that has kept me going during my old age comeback is a stubborn streak. I'm not a quitter and that is why I am making gains on that Sousa march. Actually I am looking forward to see how well I can do at tonight's practice.

Sorry to hear things went downhill for you. It was a good year for me in that I got married and also had a Saturday night teen dance gig renewed for another year for my 5 piece combo.

Also interesting the article came out the year of my birth. Great things truly happening in 1955!

Yeah, Doc, I was not only busy as hell with my little band of five but I was also married to a blonde beauty in the fall of '55. And, through thick and thin, she put up with me until I lost her to cancer in 2012.

But getting back to the Martin Committee. In the 50s' the trumpet to own was either a Conn Constellation, A Selmer Paris or A Martin. I had chosen the Constellation 28B and played it until I stopped playing in 1965.

So, Doc, you were a new-born innocent babe in 1955...☺

I wasn't sure where to put this, but to a small degree it is historic...a least a part of my history.
When I played during the 50s I was a subscriber to Up Beat Magazine and still have an ear-torn copy of the February 9th, 1955 issue, and thought Martin fans would get a kick out of this Martin ad:

      Lovely horn George, enjoy.

Dr Go, known as the French rim, I wonder why?, the later Selmers, Radial, Deville, 700 series and later all had a conventional roll.

      Regards, Stuart.

I've also heard it referred to as a tone ring.

I love the 1952 silver plate Selmer Paris medium bore Bb I purchased from

ACB in 2016 and now I have added a companion in this gorgeous 1959

Selmer Paris 24B K-Mod medium large bore Bb in lacquer.

This is a honey with a rich warm tone and will serve as a backup to my Manchester Brass band horn. It is in beautiful condition. Of course it came from ACB.

Ha, ha, I was referring to Kehaulani's remark about the only thing missing was the nude girl emerging from the water. Man that really would have made the picture a true work of art...☺
